Country in which survey conducted and sample specification
101 Bulgaria
201 Czech Republic: national probability sample
202 Czech Republic: Prague over-sample
301 Hungary: national probability sample 20-69
302 Hungary: persons younger than 20 or older than 69

[Note: For international comparisons of the population age 20-69, weight
the data by WEIGHT as specified in Parts I.G and III.]
RESPID1 Respondent
identification number in the survey
Bulgaria
Codes as received ranged from 1 to 7597 and have no intrinsic meaning.
In addition, 18 duplicate codes were reassigned values 8001-8018.
Czech Republic (and Slovakia)
An eight digit code comprised of the code for the REGION (2 digits ) plus
the code for DISTRICT (2 digits) plus respondent's ID number (number of
the household in the Microcensus survey - 4 digits). Note that the codes
for DISTRICT designate the district within a REGION and hence must be used
in conjunction with the REGION codes. See Appendix F for details.
Hungary
Codes range from 0 to 9,999.
Poland
Five digit code. The first 2 digits are equivalent to voivodeship
(province) codes (these also comprise the first two digits of the geographical
place codes; see Appendix F). The last 3 digits uniquely identify individuals
within voivodeships. All persons included in the main sample were assigned
sequential numbers, starting from 1. In the auxiliary sample, random numbers
were assigned to individuals for the purpose of selecting substitutes in
cases where interviews could not be completed with all persons in the main
sample; these numbers were then converted to range from 601-999. This makes
it possible to distinguish respondents drawn from the main and supplementary
samples.
Russia
Sequential identification numbers, from 1 to 5,002
Slovakia
[Same as the Czech Republic.]
RESPID2 Respondent
identification number in sequence
[This variable should not be used, since sequential identification numbers
have not yet been assigned. A variety of "place holding" codes
are currently in the data.]
[Note: At present only limited information is available about the following
three variables. The codebook will be updated after additional information
is received and information will be sent to each country team.]
REGION Region
of the country in which the respondent lives
Bulgaria
There are 31 regions in Bulgaria, including four for Sofia. The codes are
shown in Appendix F. In addition, a few cases are coded -1.
Czech Republic (and Slovakia)
There are eight regions (kraj) in the Czech Republic and four in
Slovakia, each with about 1.2 million inhabitants (Prague and Bratislava
are special regions). The codes are shown in Appendix F. They range from
31-38 for the Czech Republic, and from 51-54 for Slovakia.
Hungary
There are 20 regions in Hungary. The codes are not currently available.
Poland
The basic geographical unit in Poland is the province (voivodship).
The 49 voivodships in Poland have been aggregated by the Polish
statistical office into eight regions (makroregion), which reflect
historical, cultural, and geographical distinctions within Polish society.
The codes used here thus range from 1-8.
Russia
There are 78 regions (oblasts) in Russia. The codes are shown in
Appendix F.
Slovakia
[See Czech Republic.]
DISTRICT District
(small area) in which the respondent lives
Bulgaria
Districts for Bulgaria are uniquely coded within regions. The codes are
shown in Appendix F. A few cases are coded -1.
Czech Republic (and Slovakia)
Each Region is divided into Districts (okres). There are
77 districts in the Czech Republic and 37 in Slovakia; the codes are unique
within regions, and are shown in Appendix F.
Hungary
This variable was not used. All cases have SYSMIS codes.
Poland
There are 49 districts (voivodeships) in Poland. By convention,
only odd numbers are used by the Polish Statistical Office to identify
these. The codes are shown in Appendix F.
Russia
Districts within Russia are uniquely coded within regions. The codes are
shown in Appendix F. Some cases are coded -2 or -1.
Slovakia
[See Czech Republic.]
CITY City,
town, or village in which the respondent lives
Bulgaria
Cities and towns are coded within districts. The codes are not currently
available. A few cases are coded -1.
Czech Republic
Cities and towns are coded with the Region and District codes and a four
digit City code. The codes are shown in Appendix F. A few cases are coded
-2.
Hungary
Cities and towns are coded with a five digit code. The codes are shown
in Appendix F, and a more complete description is given there. xx DECIDE
WHETHER TO INCUDE DETAIL HERE.
Poland
Cities and rural counties are identified by 5-digit codes, shown in Appendix
F. The first two digits refer to the voivodeship (district); the
third digit indicates the administrative status of the unit (type of city
or rural county) and the last two digits uniquely identify the city or
rural county within the first three digits.
Russia
Cities and towns are uniquely coded within Regions and Districts. The codes
are shown in Appendix F.
Slovakia

C1 Now I would like to ask you about each school you attended, beginning
with the first. If you dropped out and then came back to the same school,
count that as two different schools.
START__ a
When did you first go to school--in what year?
TYPS__ b
What kind of school was it?
DAYS__ c
Was it a regular, evening or correspondence school?
ENDS__ d
In what year did you stop going to this school?
CLASS__ e

[Note: This question was added by each country after the standard questionnaire was completed. In Bulgaria, and Hungary, the items on "class or grade level completed" and "Was the course of study completed?" are essentially as shown. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the two questions were reversed: "Did you complete this course successfully?" followed by "How many classes/years did you complete? In the case of university or colleges, please count completed years, not semesters." In Russia, there was a special instruction to interviewers to record whether the course of study was completed.]
MAJOR__ f

introduced by the Communist regime to shorten the time required to obtain
a secondary school diploma ("maturita"), which was necessary
for admission to tertiary educational institutions (college or university).
Sometimes this term was used also to distinguish between regular tertiary
education (college or university) and special tertiary education for "cadres"
(doctoral degree in three years). For making international comparisons,
category 24 (64) can be collapsed into category 3.]

[Note: Interviewers were instructed to press for information on the current
job in cases where respondents exhibited fatigue and wanted to abandon
the activity history interview: "Repeat D2, a through j, until all
jobs or other activities are accounted for up to the present one. It is
extremely important to get information on the present or most recent
job. If the respondent wants to break off the history, say: Well, can
you at least tell me about the job you are doing now or, if you are not
working, the job you did most recently? Then ask a through j for this

[Note: these questions were worded somewhat differently in each country,
to take account of local circumstances. Each wording variant is shown here.]
Many families in Bulgaria have mixed ethnic origins. Did your father's
family include any of the following ethnicities? Please mention all that
apply. [Bulgarian was not allowed as a possibility.]
Czech (and Slovak) wording:
There are many families in our country with ancestries of various
ethnicities. How about your own family? Does your family on your father's
side have any of the following ancestries?. Please indicate all ethnicities
that apply.
Hungarian wording:
In the past many different ethnic groups have mixed together within
Hungarian territory. There are hardly any families that have no ancesters
from other ethnicities; most families, even if they think of themselves
as Hungarians think they belong to another ethnic group as well. What about
your own family? Does your family on your father's side include any of
the following ethnicities? Please indicate all that apply.
Polish wording
Poland is regarded as an uni-national country. Nevertheless, many Poles have ancestors representing other nationalities or originating from other countries. How is it witih your family? In the family of your father were there any representatives of other nations or persons originating from other countries? Have a look at a list (show card N) and indicate, please, all these origins that pertain to the family of your father.
Russian wording:
In Russia there probably are not many families whose ancesters belong
to only one nationality. How about your family? Does your family
on your father's side include any of the following nationalities? Please
indicate all that apply
[In all countries a Show Card was used.]
[Space was provided for up to 12 ancestries. Each ancestry constitutes
a separate variable. Coders were asked to circle "yes" if the
respondent indicated an ancestry and no" otherwise, but coders may
have left the response blank instead of circling no. Thus users may wish
to combine "2" and "-2" into a single "no such
ancestry" variable. For each variable, the response categories are:

shown here, including the main ethnicity identified in the separate question.
