Social Cohesion: Theories, Concepts, and Analytical Framework

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2008, 44(2): 247-270 | DOI: 10.13060/00380288.2008.44.2.02

The article focuses on the academic discourse of social cohesion. Two degrees of universality with respect to the use of the concept of social cohesion are identified and analyzed: 1) the creation of social order in general; 2) particular mechanisms of social cohesion. In conclusion, the authors propose a conceptual framework for studying the social cohesion of Czech society broadly based on the civic integration approach. This multidimensional conceptual framework encompasses the dimension of social inequalities and civic rights and the dimension of social capital.
