Diversifying Global Scholarship on Gender and Entrepreneurship: Caribbean Insights and Contributions
Talia Esnard
While gender and entrepreneurship scholarship has expanded considerably, the scholarship remains within the global canons of knowledge production, and without substantive considerations of women’s entrepreneurial activities beyond Western contexts. This hegemonic outlook limits understandings of how entrepreneurial engagement is produced within and across global contexts, and how these can be differently theorized and deployed to reassess entrepreneurial outcomes. Using historical and contemporary Caribbean scholarship, the presentation situates the structural conditions, cultural burdens and heritage, as well as relational complexities that underpin women’s entrepreneurial engagement and resilience in the region. These points of analysis are used to reconsider notions of entrepreneurial success; moving beyond firm growth and economic accumulation to encompass aspects of enterprise that are embedded within wider relations of work, family, care, community, and social reproduction. These insights are also used to demonstrate the significance of regional theorizations for diversifying global scholarship on women’s entrepreneurial experiences and outcomes.
