Participativní bydlení znamená, že na přípravě projektu bydlení nebo jeho části, na investici, případně na správě bydlení spolupracují obyvatelé. Existuje řada důvodů, proč obyvatelé vstupují do projektů participativního bydlení: reakce na snižující se dostupnost bydlení, snaha zlepšovat kvalitu bydlení a jeho architektonickou podobu, zvyšování odolnosti vůči klimatické krizi či snaha zkvalitnit sousedské vztahy.
