Spatial Dimension of Post-1989 Transformation in Czechia

Spatial Dimension of Post-1989 Transformation in Czechia

The book chapter analyzes profound economic and political changes in Czech society after 1989 from spatial perspective. The Czech society was very egalitarian in socio-economic terms at the end of 1980’s. The economic transformation dramatically changed the institutional setting, the ownerships structure and “the rule of the game” in economy, which opened the way for more social diversity and inequality. The cleavage between highly educated and people with low education has been rising both in terms of t…

Multi-scalar geographies of polarisation and peripheralisation: A case study of Czechia

Multi-scalar geographies of polarisation and peripheralisation: A case study of Czechia

A key issue in socio-economic geography is to understand how regional and social polarisation shapes the territorial organisation of society. We argue that effects of polarisation are not translated simply and straightforwardly in a whole region, but vary to a large extent with respect to different types of accessibility areas. We applied the time-accessibility framework to classify a territory into urban, peri-urban, rural, and remote rural areas at a national and regional scale. Subsequently, we computed com…

Vnitřní periferie v Česku: Multidimenzionalita sociálního vyloučení ve venkovských oblastech.

Vnitřní periferie v Česku: Multidimenzionalita sociálního vyloučení ve venkovských oblastech.

The spatial concentration of social disadvantage in rural areas not only poses a risk to social cohesion but also represents a challenge for public policy. This article draws on a multidimensional concept of disadvantage to study spatial aspects of disadvantage in Czech rural areas. Current studies aimed at identifying ‘inner peripheries’ as areas with an increased risk of social exclusion fail to distinguish between different forms of disadvantage. Their methodological approach blends regions struggling w…

Rural Idyll Without Rural Sociology? Changing Features, Functions and Research of the Czech Countryside

Rural Idyll Without Rural Sociology? Changing Features, Functions and Research of the Czech Countryside

The development of the Czech countryside differs in many ways from trajectories typical for Eastern and Central European rural areas in the last 25 years. In our article, we discuss the nature of the ‘Czech exceptionalism’, with reference to three examples, namely population development, the dynamics of rural/agricultural labour markets and rural governance. Firstly, we describe the major driving forces behind rural development in Czechia over the past 25 years and how these forces are reflected in t…

The reurbanisation concept and its utility for contemporary research on post-socialist cities: The case of the Czech Republic

The reurbanisation concept and its utility for contemporary research on post-socialist cities: The case of the Czech Republic

The concept of reurbanisation is discussed in this article from theoretical and methodological perspectives. Reurbanisation has been defined as one of the stages of urban development recently, but it is also tied to processes of gentrification, or perceived as a policy aimed at the revitalisation of inner cities. The main objective of this contribution is to discuss three principal and different perspectives of reurbanisation: firstly, reurbanisation as defined on the macro-scale of settlement system developme…

In the analytical part of the article links between populations in regions and electoral results is discussed in order ‘extract’ phantom borders. Existují prostorové kontextové vlivy na volební chování i v relativně nacionalizovaném stranickém systému?

European Strategy for regional responses to demographic changes

European Strategy for regional responses to demographic changes

Demographic change is one of the most important challenges for economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development in many regions of Central Europe. Population losses due to low fertility rates, migration and population ageing have already been experienced in many parts of regions, cities as well as some metropolitan areas. It is crucial to realize that population shrinkage and ageing is and will be important both for urban and rural areas in Central Europe. All forecasts state that these p…

The main goal of the book is to study spatial patterns of voting behaviour in parliamentary elections in Czechia between 1920 and 2006. The book seeks to analyse voting behaviour through studying political preferences expressed by the elections of political parties in the general elections. The four types of questions have been asked: 1. How large are regional differences in electoral results on the territory of Czechia? How the voting patterns look like? 2. Do voting patterns tend to be stable over time or th…
