Reinforced by the energy crisis: Nuclear revival and public opinion in the Czech Republic

Reinforced by the energy crisis: Nuclear revival and public opinion in the Czech Republic

As a low-carbon baseload source, nuclear energy is experiencing a revival in policy toward climate-neutrality targets, which has been accompanied by changes in public opinion following the 2021–2023 energy crisis. This article compares data from three representative public opinion surveys (2021, 2022, and 2023) to understand the substantial rise in acceptance of nuclear energy in the Czech Republic. Our hypothesis-driven research employs multiple ordinary least squares regressions and constructs two types of…

How Small Municipalities Contribute to Robust Crisis Governance—Experiences From Two Recent Large-scale Crises in Czechia

How Small Municipalities Contribute to Robust Crisis Governance—Experiences From Two Recent Large-scale Crises in Czechia

This article explores how small municipalities in Czechia adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic and Ukrainian refugee crisis, and thus contributed to governance robustness. Through 24 semi-structured interviews with mayors, we examine local challenges and responses, revealing how these crises exposed weaknesses in public administration, particularly in decision-making, coordination, and communication at the outset. Mayors played key roles, making swift, independent decisions to meet urgent needs, often bypassing st…

Public resistance to climate policy amid energy crisis and populism: The case of the European Green Deal in the Czech Republic

Public resistance to climate policy amid energy crisis and populism: The case of the European Green Deal in the Czech Republic

This paper examines negative opinions on the European Green Deal (EGD) by combining critical discourse analysis of three Czech media and public opinion data analysis based on a representative sample of 821 Czech adults. Against the backdrop of the EGD contestation in the media debate and disagreement among the public, we evaluate the impact of the energy crisis and populism on resistance to this policy in a heavily coal-dependent post-communist Central European country. We found that neither the actors in the …

Percepce souvislostí pandemie covid-19 a klimatické změny v české blogosféře.

Percepce souvislostí pandemie covid-19 a klimatické změny v české blogosféře.

Social Perception of Trees in the Landscape: The Connection Between Attitudes and Visual Preferences

Social Perception of Trees in the Landscape: The Connection Between Attitudes and Visual Preferences

The study presented in this paper uses a representative sample of the Czech population to analyse the relationships between attitudes to trees and preferences for landscapes with trees. We ask whether a positive assessment of the environmental benefits of trees in general and old and dead trees in particular leads to preferences for close-to-nature forms of the tree landscape. The results show that tree landscape preferences are primarily affected by attitudes attached to trees, rather than by sociodemographic…

Vzestupné a sestupné politické dráhy českých poslanců a senátorů

The aim of this manuscript is to analyze notions of democracy among Czech mayors. Czechia is dotted with municipalities of various sizes, each with its own mayor, each of whom has a vision of how democracy at the local level should be practiced. Our focus here is on two types of democracies that are seen as alternatives: participatory democracy and representative democracy. For the analyses, two mutually interleaved data sources concerning the Czech mayors were employed: Political Leaders in European Cities (2…
