Trends in educational fluidity after the fall of socialism in the Czech Republic.

The aim of this paper is to identify the trends in educational fluidity after the fall of socialism in 1989 in the Czech Republic. The data are based on 27 sample surveys carried out from 1990 to 2009, including information on the child’s and his father’s education. The trends in educational fluidity are analysed both in view of the years and with respect to the birth cohorts, i.e. on the grounds of two effects: unequal educational odds (according to the socio-economic origin) and the “differentiation”…

Impact of Primary and Secondary Social Origin Factors on the Transition to University in the Czech Republic

The main objective of this paper is to show to what extent and why students with the same academic aptitude but different social backgrounds have different odds of entering university. For our analysis, we separated primary and secondary factors of social origin in the formation of educational inequalities (Boudon 1974). The results show that the primary and secondary factors have approximately the same influence on the transition to university. The Czech schools do not affect the process of forming educationa…

From Quantitative to Qualitative Differences: Testing MMI and EMI in the Czech Secondary School System in the First Decade of the 21st Century

This article examines secondary education in the Czech Republic between 2000 and 2010. We analyzed the consequences of educational expansion on odds to achieve secondary education with a school-leaving certificate (SLC) by social origin. We utilize the theories of maximally maintained inequality – MMI (Raftery & Hout, 1993) and effectively maintained inequality – EMI (Lucas, 2001). We analyzed data from PISA 2000 to 2009 for the Czech Republic. We support EMI theory against MMI. Quantitative (vertical) dif…

Educational Inequalities and Educational Mobility under Socialism in the Czech Republic

Educational Inequalities and Educational Mobility under Socialism in the Czech Republic

The sociology of education on the Czech Republic has focused almost entirely on relative measures of inequality (based on odds ratio data) than to trends in educational mobility (based on mobility tables). Therefore, there is a significant gap in our knowledge of how the Czech education system has evolved in the long term. Although the periods before and after the onset of socialism appear to have had very specific mobility patterns, we know relatively little about their differences. Therefore, this article at…

Češi a životní prostředí (na okraj jednoho výzkumu)

The article deals with the postmodernization theory founded by Ronald Inglehart. The authors tried to testify it on the data coming from an international survey ISSP done in years 1993 and 2000 and focused on attitudes and behaviour to environment. Main question of the article is following: "Are postmaterialists in the Czech Republic (who represent about 10 % of the population) more "friendly" to environment?" The findings show that Czech postmaterialists have higher knowledge of environmental area and they sh…

The Evolution of Educational Inequalities in the Czech Republic after 1989

The paper addresses the development of higher education in the Cz…

Alternative models of entrance exams and access to higher education: the case of the Czech Republic

The study compares the potential effects of a university admission exam model based on program-specific knowledge and an alternative model relying on general study aptitude (GSA) in the context of a strongly stratified educational system with considerable excess of demand over supply of university education. Using results of the Sonda Maturant 1998 survey, we show that in the specific context of the Czech Republic, displaying the above characteristics in the given period, an admission exam model based on gener…
