Především od poloviny 90. let 20. století se v ČR rozpoutala v rámci sociálních věd široká diskuze na téma rapidního propadu porodnosti a sňatečnosti, který nastal v průběhu posledního desetiletí ve většině středoevropských a východoevropských zemí.
