Patterns of Family Life Courses in Europe – between Standardisation and Diversity. A Cross-national Comparison of Family Trajectories and Life Course Norms in European Countries

Throughout recent decades, a gradual shift away from an early contract-ed and simple life course pattern which dominated in the 1950s and 1960s to late protracted and more complex patterns could be observed within European countries. Yet, despite multiple cross-national similarities in the changes of individual life course patterns, there exist considerable differences in the form and frequency of these changes. We argue that one possible way of better understanding these variations is to examine the connectio…

Metodologické aspekty měření postojů české veřejnosti k trestání pachatelů trestných činů

Metodologické aspekty měření postojů české veřejnosti k trestání pachatelů trestných činů

The trend towards harsher punishment of offenders, usually termed the ‘new punitiveness’, is often explained as a response to deepening social and economic uncertainty. One important area that criminal policy research has long dealt with is public attitudes to punishment. Statements that the public want more severe punishments for those who break the law are often used to justify introducing measures to make the criminal justice system harsher. There are, however, different ways to measure public opinion o…

Are Parental Leaves Considered as Work Interruptions by Survey Respondents? A Methodological Note

Parental leaves and family-related work interruptions are linked to a variety of issues, such as children’s well-being or women’s work trajectories. Yet, the measurement of periods of absence fromthe labour market might be imprecise, especially in retrospective surveys. To evaluate the quality of the collected information, we examine whether women who reported taking a parental leave longerthan six months also mentioned a corresponding work interruption, using the 2008 Living in Canada Survey (LCS) – Pil…

Dočasná stabilita? Volební podpora politických stran v České republicev letech 1990 - 2010

Dočasná stabilita? Volební podpora politických stran v České republicev letech 1990 - 2010

This book explains why Czech voters choose specific parties. The focus is on the long-term determinants of electoral behaviour (cleavages, left-right orientation, and party identification) and on four parties with long-term representation in the Czech parliament: ČSSD, KDU-ČSL, KSČM and ODS. Moreover, the authors focused on changes in the determinants of electoral stability over time. This helped them to identify any important variations in the structural determinants of electoral behaviour over time.339,- …

De-standardization of family trajectories: Childbearing in unmarried cohabitation not only as an alternative but also as a pathway to marriage

Based on a secondary analysis of data from qualitative research of unmarried parental couples, this article explores childbearing in unmarried cohabitation from the perspective of de-standardisation and individualization of family trajectories. Drawing upon a differentiation of their situation at the moment around childbirth and their actual attitudes, it distinguishes heterogeneity of views of unmarried parents on the position of an unmarried cohabitation with child in their family trajectories.
