The article discusses the policies concerning the institution of maternity leave in several European countries. Discussed are primarily the length and conditions of maternity leave and the amount of compensation paid through the maternity benefit. The outcome is a scale of all the countries based on a variable that combines the effects of both the amount of a monthly compensation in relation to the average income and the amount of maternity benefit paid during the whole course of maternity leave.…

The Role and Position of Committees of the House of Deputies of the Czech Republic in the Period of Transformation

The article provides analysis of the gradual institutionalization of the committees of the Czech Parliament between 1993 and 1999 and shows that in the committees, gradual expert and political professionalization of the deputies occurs ů deputies acquire a new type of supra-sector specialization. In addition, there have been significant changes in the perception and evaluation of individual committees by the deputies, during the period under study.…

The article offers an analysis of the gradual institutionalization of the committees of the House of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic between 1993 and 1999. The committees are viewed as structures of expertise and politics. Article also examines the impact of the change of the Rules of Procedures on the work of committees. The Constitutional Debate: A One Man Show? Václav Klaus and the Constitutional Discourse in the Czech Media
