The outlooks of nuclear energy in society: Unraveling public attitudes in the context of climate and energy security challenges

This article presents the results of a systematic literature review following the PRISMA protocol and answering the research question of how climate change or energy security considerations affect public attitudes towards nuclear energy. 82 articles published in English since 2011 and indexed in scientific databases were selected for the review. After providing quantitative bibliometric information, we conduct thematic analysis to describe qualitatively the main research themes traceable in the literature, usi…

Psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the Czech version of the Temporal Satisfaction with Life Scale

The aim of this study was to validate the Temporal Satisfaction with Life Scale (TSWLS Pavot et al., 1998) in the Czech language, including the examination of its psychometric properties and measurement invariance by gender and age. The TSWLS is a 15-item instrument for measuring life satisfaction (LS) from a temporal perspective allowing the comparison of the level of life satisfaction in the past, present, and future. The analysis was based on a representative research sample (N = 427) of Czech people older …

Counter-strategizing after a dialogue failure: Stakeholder involvement and nuclear waste disposal in the Czech Republic

Counter-strategizing after a dialogue failure: Stakeholder involvement and nuclear waste disposal in the Czech Republic

This case study focuses on the temporal dynamics of stakeholder interaction to provide a sociological analysis of the deep geological repository siting process in the Czech Republic. By introducing the concept of counter-strategizing, it clarifies the shift in interaction after the state authorities backed out of a dialogue with local communities at pre-selected sites in 2016 but continued to push ahead with their siting mission. The study triangulates complementary data sources (interviews, focus groups, cont…

Amount and Causes of Food Waste in Households from Perspective of Consumers – the Case Study of the Czech Republic

Food waste occurs throughout the food distribution chain, with households, i.e., consumers, accounting for the largest share of total food waste. Different methods can be used to determine how much food people waste in their households, with widely varying results. Direct measurement methods prove to be the most accurate, but due to their financial, logistical, and time-consuming nature, they are not very common, and therefore questionnaires based on subjective estimates of respondents are very often used. Thi…

Perception of the Connection between the Covid-19 Pandemic and Climate Change in the Czech blogosphere

Perception of the Connection between the Covid-19 Pandemic and Climate Change in the Czech blogosphere

The article is dedicated to reflecting the links between the climate crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic crisis in the context of Czech social media, specifically on several blogging platforms. The processes leading to the climate and pandemic crises are highly intertwined, based in the way humans interact with the environment on a global scale. However, the circumstances and consequences of both crises, as well as the ways they are dealt with, also share common features. The authors identify such contexts as ref…

Emergent Consequences of Narrating Futures in Energy Transitions

Emergent Consequences of Narrating Futures in Energy Transitions

The paper presents a general theoretical argument about narrating futures and demonstrates its validity on the topic of energy transitions. It goes beyond the perspective of social constructionism and analyzes the temporal relationship between narratives, as employed in social interactions, and the reality of structural conditions in societies. The first part combines the morphogenetic approach of Margaret Archer and the narrative hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur to conceptualize emergent consequences, clarifying …

The Transformation of Order in Narrative as Discordant Concord: Using Paul Ricoeur to Explore Narrative Realism as Part of Social Morphogenesis

The Transformation of Order in Narrative as Discordant Concord: Using Paul Ricoeur to Explore Narrative Realism as Part of Social Morphogenesis

Social interaction as the middle phase of the morphogenetic sequence described by Margaret Archer presupposes that interpretative activities go on between individuals and collectivities. Novel meanings emerge in social interaction and spur the processes of structural elaboration. The hermeneutics of actors (or agents) should be part of the morphogenetic explanatory framework. Narratives as a distinctive species of interpretation will then become more susceptible to a mode of analysis based in realism. By adopt…

A Morphogenetic Approach to Social Aspects of Energy: The Case of Coal

A Morphogenetic Approach to Social Aspects of Energy: The Case of Coal

This chapter proposes the morphogenetic approach, as elaborated within the confines of Margaret Archer’s critical realism, as a suitable starting point for theoretically grounded research into social aspects of energy. It demonstrates in outline the suitability of this approach in the special case of coal, the mining and combustion of which epitomize the ambiguity of the industrial era. The chapter applies the morphogenetic approach in a way, which is both comprehensive and responsive to empirical data. The …

Česká a slovenská národní identita v percepci Československa

Apportioning Uncertain Voters in Pre-Election Polls in a Multi-Party System

In recent decades, voters have been postponing their decisions about what party to vote for to a time closer to the elections. One factor in this delay is when people are considering more than one political party. Drawing on two data sets from the general elections in the Czech Republic, we present an approach that assigns a person’s vote to multiple considered parties. We test the impact of the different apportioning of probabilities on the overall accuracy of poll estimates and on the estimates for each po…

The SQWLi questionnaire was developed for the long-term measurement of subjectively perceived quality of working life. The aim of this study is to test the instrument's measurement invariance between 2009 and 2019 and determine whether - despite the modifications made to the instrument over the years - the results remain comparable. Data from eight representative surveys of the economically active population in the Czech Republic were analysed (total N = 6909) using the MG CFA method (configural, metric, and s…

Nový přístup v testování ekvivalence na příkladu měření subjektivního blahobytu

Nový přístup v testování ekvivalence na příkladu měření subjektivního blahobytu

Survey-based measures of subjective well-being are increasingly often analyzed cross-culturally. However, international comparison of these measures requires measurement invariance. Therefore, the major goal of this study was to investigate the cross-country comparability of the 5-item subjective well-being scales used in the International Social Survey Programme (2011, 2017). This study applied both the traditional exact and the more recent Bayesian approximate approach to assessed whether the subjective well…

Schutz’s concept of intersubjectivity departs from radical, philosophical analyses of the constitution of the other (alter ego) in my consciousness. Instead, he takes the existence of the other and his or her subjectivity for granted and investigates the intersubjective relations of understanding and action among individuals. The shifting of phenomenological lifeworld theory from philosophy to sociology enables Schütz to study social interaction and order. The article identifies the premises of this concept…

Energy and the public. How societies communicate and decide about energy issues?

Energy and the public. How societies communicate and decide about energy issues?

As people living in the EU states we take it for granted that a source of electricity will be there whenever we need it. It is a considerably less self-evident matter, how the electricity we rely on is supposed to be produced and distributed. The energy sector stands at a crossroads today and newly emerging options of energy strategies challenge the old ways of doing the business. This module approaches technical students as potential future energy experts, who will need to integrate social or societal aspects…

Philosophy and Ethics of Energy Development. What are the most general questions concerning our attitudes to energy technologies?

Energy production and energy facilities and projects are based on scientific knowledge and they require employment of various kinds of technologies. This links energy development with a more general view of natural sciences and technologies and their function in contemporary advanced societies. The impact of technologies on everyday lives of individuals, groups and communities has been growing unprecedentedly in recent decades. It does not matter whether we like it or not, whether we are techno-enthusiasts or …
