Using one of the first surveys of party members undertaken in Central and Eastern Europe, this study outlines the socio-demographic and attitudinal profile of Czech Christian Democratic (KDU-ČSL) party members. An exploration of the cohesiveness of KDU-ČSL party members and Czech parliamentary party groupings (PPGs) demonstrates that the power of middle level party elites to exert influence on the legislative process is determined by issue area and party. …

Searching for the Right Organization: Ideology and Party Structure in East-Central Europe
The article examines four centre-right parties in East-Central Europe in order to assess the impact of ideology on party organization and revisit the thesis of organizational weakness in the region. The data collected indicate that, together with electoral success, inherited resources and national context, ideology does indeed shape the style of organization. Since the early nineties it has been widely assumed that the Czech communist party (KSČM) will eventually disappear. Vliv volební účasti na zisky jednotlivých politických stran: případ voleb do Poslanecké sněmovny v roce 2006
Text analyses the effect of turnout on the party support of different parties in the Czech Republic. After introduction of the main theories and research strategies of partisan effects of turnout hypotheses concerning this issue are tested. The results show that higher turnout is advantageous for the parties whose voters lack strong party identification (ČSSD and the Green Party). On the other hand, it brings lower gains to parties with disciplined electorate (ODS, KDU-ČSL and partly also for KSČM).…

The paper analyses the candidate selection procedure in political parties before the elections to the European Parliament. It focuses on the four main Czech political parties: ČSSD, KDU-ČSL, KSČM and ODS. Findings from the analysis of written documents are compared with the results from a questionnaire survey among the candidates. This study explores the sources of attitude constraints regarding the role of government in the economy using ISSP 2006. This research confirms that the sources of attitude constraint in the Czech Republic are similar to that observed in Western Europe and the USA.
