This paper examines the relationship between electoral systems and female political representation in post-communist states. West European research has suggested that more women are elected in proportional representation systems (PR) than in majoritarian ones, and points out PR’s characteristics (district magnitude, electoral thresholds and closed party lists) as the main explanatory factors. This paper provides a framework for the analysis of social movements, drawing on political process theory (PPT). The author argues that the concept of political opportunity structure is still adequate, although it has to be re-conceptualized at various points.
