European Social Survey received the prestigiousDescartes Prize 2005 from Commissioner for Science and Research, JanezPotocnik at a high level ceremony in London. This is regarded asEurope's most
prestigious science prize, awarded annually by theEuropean Commission for "excellence in scientific research". This yearthere were five winners from different disciplines, but this is thefirst time that a
social science and humanities project has everwon. We consider this an important breakthrough for the social sciencesand humanities in Europe.
