Political Knowledge in the Czech Republic

Political Knowledge in the Czech Republic

About this bookThis book examines the origins, nature, and impact of different facets of political knowledge in the Czech Republic between 1967 and 2014. The central argument presented in this book is that evaluating citizens on the basis of objective, or factual, knowledge alone makes little sense. What citizens know about politics comes from a variety of sources that are complementary. This is the first detailed study of how much Czechs know about politics, and why it matters. Here are some of the key fin…

Dočasná stabilita? Volební podpora politických stran v České republicev letech 1990 - 2010

Dočasná stabilita? Volební podpora politických stran v České republicev letech 1990 - 2010

This book explains why Czech voters choose specific parties. The focus is on the long-term determinants of electoral behaviour (cleavages, left-right orientation, and party identification) and on four parties with long-term representation in the Czech parliament: ČSSD, KDU-ČSL, KSČM and ODS. Moreover, the authors focused on changes in the determinants of electoral stability over time. This helped them to identify any important variations in the structural determinants of electoral behaviour over time.339,- …

Public Opinion, Politics and Society in Contemporary Ireland.

This book demonstrates what the polling evidence tells us about changes in Irish opinion since 1970 towards key issues: The economy - has the Celtic tiger economy changed Irish citizens? --- Northern Ireland - have aspirations for a united Ireland disappeared with the peace process? --- The Liberal agenda - has Ireland become less conservative and a more tolerant society on issues such as divorce, abortion, and homosexuality? --- European integration - have Irish attitudes toward the EU changed since accession…

Adjectives of Democracy. Citizenship and Political Attitudes under Socialist and Liberal Democracy in the Czech Republic

Adjectives of Democracy. Citizenship and Political Attitudes under Socialist and Liberal Democracy in the Czech Republic

The central empirical puzzle addressed in this book is why are Czech citizens’ attitudes towards key facets of democracy so similar under socialist democracy in 1968 and liberal democracy in 2008? Examining unique survey datasets from the late 1960s and 2008 this book reveals that Czech and Slovak citizens’ political attitudes can justifiably be characterised in terms of stability. This stability may be understood as a general feature of citizens’ relationship with democratic values and their implementat…

An Examination of Legislative Roll-Call Voting in the Czech Republic Using Spatial Models

Using roll-call and parliamentary survey data from the sixth legislature in the Czech Republic (2006–2008), this research demonstrates that spatial models of roll-call data are not readily explainable in terms of party cohesion and discipline. The difficulty of making a substantive interpretation of dimensions extracted suggests the use of spatial models of roll-call voting where party discipline is strong requires more theoretical and methodological work.…

‘It’s the Economy, Stupid’ Popular Support for EU Accession in the Czech Republic

In this article, a comparison is made between economic and identity explanations of preferences toward EU membership in the Czech Republic. This research demonstrates that economics rather then identity is a more powerful explanation of public opinion toward accession. The results presented should not be taken to imply that instrumental rather than ideological or affect based motivations determine general attitudes toward integration. …

Pragmatists, Ideologues and the General Law of Curvilinear Disparity: The Case of the Irish Labour Party

In this article we examine the opinion structure of Irish Labour party members and supporters. Our purpose is to test May's law of curvilinear disparity by dividing party members into two groups as outlined by Kitschelt. By focusing on ideological differences within political parties Kitschelt identifies two types of members: ideologues and pragmatists. We use two individual-level data sets: the Labour Leadership Election Study (LLES) and the Irish National Election Study (INES), to test May's law. We fi…

Conflicting expectations in overlapping systems of multi-level governance

Conflicting expectations in overlapping systems of multi-level governance

Many states today are members of a number of systems of multilevel governance such as the UN, WTO, EU and NATO. Consequently, there is increasing scope for states to be presented with conflicting expectations. With the Iraq crisis, states with simultaneous membership of these organisations were faced with an unprecedented dilemma – choose to support NATO or the EU. This chapter examines this dilemma using the Czech Republic as a case study. …

Přesuny voličů ve volbách do Evropského parlamentu v roce 2004 v České republice: Testování některých implikací teorie národních voleb druhého řádu

Přesuny voličů ve volbách do Evropského parlamentu v roce 2004 v České republice: Testování některých implikací teorie národních voleb druhého řádu

Using an ecological inference technique this paper examines vote switching in the Czech Republic between the 2002 Chamber elections and 2004 European elections. These results are compared with two individual-level mass survey results. The results of these analyses confirm many of the predictions of SOET and generate further hypotheses for future research.…

Do the Options Offered Help Determine the Answers Given? Impact of Response Options Effects on Answers to Party Closeness in Two Post-European Election Surveys, 2004

There has been much scholarly debate over the measurement of party identification and the degree to which closeness to parties is an enduring stable attitude. This research investigates an important puzzle where two post-European election surveys undertaken during June 2004 yield significantly different estimates of citizen closeness to political parties. Building on this insight we argue in this paper that the differences in estimates of party closeness observed tells us important things about the nature of p…

Does Party Organization Still Matter in the Czech Republic? An Examination of the Czech Christian Democratic Party

Using one of the first surveys of party members undertaken in Central and Eastern Europe, this study outlines the socio-demographic and attitudinal profile of Czech Christian Democratic (KDU-ČSL) party members. An exploration of the cohesiveness of KDU-ČSL party members and Czech parliamentary party groupings (PPGs) demonstrates that the power of middle level party elites to exert influence on the legislative process is determined by issue area and party. …

Party System Nationalization and Non-Uniform Vote Switching: Evidence from the Czech Republic

National rather than regional party systems are the norm in most democratic states. The link between party system nationalization and the individual voter has not been examined in the same detail. Here this link is explored using an ecological inference analysis of vote switching. This research, using the Czech Republic as a case study, shows that the presence of high party system nationalization evident across a pair of elections may be associated with non-uniform electoral swings.…

Účast při volbách do Evropského parlamentu v roce 2004 v České republice

Účast při volbách do Evropského parlamentu v roce 2004 v České republice

Text analyses turnout in European Parliament elections in the Czech Republic using individual-level data from post-election survey. It searches into the four main sources of electoral turnout in European parliament elections: socio-demographic characteristics, political attitudes, attitudes towards the EU integration and the impact of electoral campaign and media. All these sources prove to have an impact on turnout.…
