The Political Space for Women´s Agency in the Framework of EU Eastern Enlargement

The Political Space for Women´s Agency in the Framework of EU Eastern Enlargement

The article deals with the phenomenon of the sexual harassment in the working place in the Czech Republic. The authors analyze sexual harassment as one of effects of men’s symbolic power over women causing cultural misrecognition of women and at the same time as one of factors supporting economic inequality between men and women in western societies. They apply the two-dimensional theory of justice by Nancy Fraser and argue that the existence of sexual harassment confirms Fraser’s notion of gender as bival…

Partneři v životě, partneři v podnikání - genderové vztahy v řízení firmy

Leaving Berkeley after 35 years: An Interview with Arlie Hochschild

Leaving Berkeley after 35 years: An Interview with Arlie Hochschild

In May 2006 I was working on a research project at Berkeley. There I met Arlie Hochschild, whose formal academic career as a professor of sociology at Berkely University for the past 35 years was about to end. I had the opportunity to visit one of her classes and discuss research methodology and ways of writing up results. We also spoke about the differences between American and Czech gender regimes. At that time I got the idea of asking Arlie if she would do an interview for this journal, and she agreed. A…

This article sets out to show how the position of women in the labour market, and the individual factors that influence their position, have changed over the course of the transformation of Czech society in the 1990s. The main factors affecting the position of Czech women in the labour market are economic reform and various aspects associated with the reform process, particularly the neglect to implement practical solutions to economic and gender inequalities, the state´s social policy, which throughout the 1…

Nezájem pověřených. Přístup českých politiků a političek, úředníků a úřednic k otázkám genderové rovnosti

Nezájem pověřených. Přístup českých politiků a političek, úředníků a úřednic k otázkám genderové rovnosti

The aim of this text is to reveal the position of the Czech government and government officials who were responsible for gender and equality issues during the preparation for the Czech Republic’s accession to the EU. Based on this insight I argue that it was the government’s approach to the introduction of legislation on gender equality and on addressing gender discrimination and inequality in Czech society that contributed most to the fact that the new legislation does not work in practice, that no positi…

Genderové nerovnosti v odměňování na stejné pracovní pozici: sociální vyloučení žen

Genderové nerovnosti v odměňování na stejné pracovní pozici: sociální vyloučení žen

Using firm-level data from the Czech Republic in the years 1998, 2002, and 2004, we examine whether the introduction of legislative measures for gender equality connected with the accession to the European Union had significant effects on gender wage gaps. The central conclusion of our analysis is that within-job wage discrimination is a significant factor in the Czech labor market and that there were no substantive changes during the period studied. Women doing the same job in the same company earn about 10 p…

Odraz nejistot, znevýhodnění a marginalizace na trhu práce v biografických výpovědích žen s nízkým vzděláním

The paper addresses the specific conditions of unskilled women, struggling to integrate their paid work and unpaid work in the Czech Republic. The analysis is based on three biographic interviews regarding the work trajectories of women whose highest level of education is vocational or lower. The employees with the lower levels of human and social capital occupy marginalized positions in the labour market. Enakost spolov na trgih delovne sile v Republiki Češki, na Madžarskem in v Sloveniji v obdobju gospodarske tranzicije in pristopa k Evropski uniji

In this article we compare the three post-socialist countries during the period of economic transition and accession to the EU (2000-2005) from the standpoint of gender equality in the labour market. We assume that the position of men and women in labour markets is influenced by three interrelated factors that differ in the three countries: 1. the situation in the labour market 2. mechanisms for the reconciliation of work and the family and 3. changes in the institutional and legislative framework and employme…

Možnosti skloubení práce a rodiny v životě žen

The chapter raises parallels between the countries in the study and the dynamics of organisational processes in those countries – CR, Germany, France and Sweden. The substantial differences between the employee policy of companies in their home countries and in the Czech branches derive partly from the differences in the family and employment policies in different countries, the gender structure of related institutions at various levels in different countries and within the field the enterprise operates in, …

Teoretická východiska výzkumu podmínek rodičovství v podnikovém prostředí a podniková praxe v Čechách

The Chapter presents a theoretical introduction to the sociology of organisations through the lens of the sociology of gender, and shows how the under-developed research on gender processes at the company level is linked to the survival of organisational structures that emerged alongside modernisation and is based on a rationalised principle of patriarchy. Contemporary organisations and companies have only slowly and reluctantly begun to face the fact that their employees – both men and women – have privat…
