K nízké sňatečnosti v České republice

K nízké sňatečnosti v České republice

In the 90´s, marriage rate dropped in the Czech Republic. Based on representative surveys of Czech population from 2005, we analyze reasons behind such behaviour and test Hoffmann-Nowotny’s hypothesis claiming that low first marriage rate is driven by low fertility rate. Whenever young people start making plans on a family, there tends to be a marriage plan. Where the idea of a family is distant to them, marriage seems unattractive. Unmarried parents are the only exception.…

Why did distinct types of dual-earner models in Czech, Slovak and East German societies develop and persist?

Why did distinct types of dual-earner models in Czech, Slovak and East German societies develop and persist?

We examine pre1989 and post1989 work-care models in Czech, Slovak and East German societies. Once problems of the modernized gender model emerged, Czechoslovakia and GDR set two distinct policy paths and differences in work-care practices and values emerged. Based on the institutional and cultural legacy, we explain why the post1989 transition period was accompanied by continuity in work-care models and substantive changes evolved only then, in a period of stability.…

Výzkumná sonda do světa rodičovství a bezdětnosti v časopisech životního stylu pro muže

Men´s and women´s magazines use biological explanations of reproductive behavior and expect men and women to become mothers and fathers once in their life. Women´s magazines stress value of motherhood because of motherhood itself (mothering as well as becoming a mother). Men´s magazines conceptualize fatherhood as a part of living in heterosexual partnership rather than (a value of) fathering.…

Mnohohlasem: Editorský úvod

For its strong informative value and its description of the multifarious activities of pro-women and feminist groups the publication In Multiple Voices (Mnohohlasem) will certainly be welcome reading among the academic, political and activist communities. The book shows that what lies behind the apparent lack of interest among Czech women in feminism is their rejection of the discriminatory “label” from its opponents. “One who names is in a position of superiority to what is named” (I. Leaves, Allowances, and Facilities: Childcare Past and Present

Leaves, Allowances, and Facilities: Childcare Past and Present

We argue that despite the assumption that there was a cohesive ideology of care during the communist regime, changes in ideologies, institutional settings and practices of childcare came about in Czechoslovakia in different decades. Reasons for post-1989 childcare in Czech society (and other postcommunist countries contradicting declination of male breadwinner) are rooted in past. Current development in Czech society strengthens misrecognition of care and class and gender bias in citizenship.…

Social Citizenship and Care in Czech Society

Social Citizenship and Care in Czech Society

The authors argue that the recognition of care and carers in society requires rethinking of the citizenship paradigm focused on paid work and ideal of the independent individual. The obstacles for gender equity are addressed by examining the social organisation of childcare as a paradigmatic example of male (and also ethnic and class) bias in the construction of social citizenship as it is applied in most European states.…

Gendered Citizenship in Multicultural Europe

Gendered Citizenship in Multicultural Europe

Authors examine insti¬tutional contexts, ideologies and practices that have sha¬ped citizenship of women in various socio-economic, ethnic and national groups in Czech society since 1940s. They challenge static descriptions of gender relations in the communist societies in Europe. The continuity of discourse, practices, and institutions before and after 1989 is highlighted, de¬monstrating how difficult it is for cultural and institutional changes to take place.…
