Only a Dead Fish Flows with the Stream: Subversive Voices, NGOization and Czech Women’s Organizing
Authors focus on Czech women’s organizing in recent years within context of increasing pressure on organizations to professionalize and become project-and reform-oriented. They discuss reasons for and consequences of changes in funding and orientation that have accompanied European enlargement. Then, they turn to a closer look at the interplay between increasingly professionalized women’s NGOs and explicitly anti-institutional groups of anarchofeminists.…

The authors analyze the manner in which the ab/normality of childlessness and normativity of parenthood is established, maintained and affected. For this purpose the authors use an analysis of discourses based on sixty problem-centred interviews with childless men and women of three age categories and public internet chats between parents and the childless/childfree, focused on the topic of parenthood, childlessness and infertility in both cases.…

Results of an analysis of representative sample data on reproductive preferences and factors influencing reproductive behavior in Czech society. The chapter analyses supplementary open questions concerning the experience of domestic violence. Thanks to qualitative analysis it offers answers to some questions which the quantitative survey could capture only partially (motivations and experience of violence, reflection of one’s own behavior, recommendations). Based on the analysis, it presents recommendations concerning the support from doctors, psychologists and police in addressing the issue of domestic violence.…

In the 90´s, marriage rate dropped in the Czech Republic. Based on representative surveys of Czech population from 2005, we analyze reasons behind such behaviour and test Hoffmann-Nowotny’s hypothesis claiming that low first marriage rate is driven by low fertility rate. Whenever young people start making plans on a family, there tends to be a marriage plan. Where the idea of a family is distant to them, marriage seems unattractive. Unmarried parents are the only exception.…
