Comparative Discourse Analysis of the Security-Privacy Dilemma: Salience of Security Issues in Printed Media.

New technologies represent opportunities (to ensure safety) and threats (to privacy and freedom), and also emphasize key tensions - between security and freedom/privacy and between security and its various costs (economic, health, public support, etc.). The dilemma of our times, for civil society, governments, the media, and individual citizens, is the level of safety we desire and at what price. In this process, the role of the media surpasses that of an intermediary and is important in the following five way…

Tyršova apologie nového náboženství na pozadí islámu

This study refers to a li.le known area in which Czech aesthete, philosopher and Sokol founder Miroslav Tyrš (1832–1884) was involved, i.e. his religious thinking. Although Tyrš only wrote about religion as a sideline, it was of importance to him. In a study on Islam as the most advanced classical religion, he outlined the (anticipated) emergence of a “modern religion”, which he described within the context of Islam. Hence regardless of his inspiration and manifest objective, this work comes more under…

Academic mobility in the context of linked lives

Academic mobility is usually perceived and discussed as a positive phenomenon — as a prerequisite for building a competitive and successful economy and quality science. Academic mobility has now become essential to building a successful academic career in many research domains. On the policy level the negative impact of academic mobility on researchers’ lives and especially women’s is usually overlooked and marginalized. In my paper I focus on academic mobility in the context of academics’ relationship…

Coping Strategies for Sexual Harassment in Higher Education: “An Official Action May Harm you in the End More than if Someone Slaps your Butt”

The paper asks in what ways students in Czech higher education cope with sexual harassment and what strategies they choose to deal with it. It builds on a qualitative study of a higher education institution in Prague. The study reveals that student’s narratives are organized on two planes between which there is a clear discrepancy: on the “hypothetical” plane external strategies of open resistance against sexual harassment predominate on the second plane involving students’ narratives about dealing wit…

Monitoring report presents data describing the status of women in Czech research and development. Data covering years 2001 to 2011 show that the presumption that share of women among scientists will grow when there is a steady increase in the proportion of women among students of universities is wrong. The Czech Republic has 50% women among people qualified for the research profession, but there is only 25.1% women among researchers in 2011.…

Kniha, jež vznikla v rámci projektu „Dějiny a současnost české sociologie“, zkoumá vliv sociologie na jiné vědní obory (případně vliv oboustranný), a to specificky v Českých zemích, resp. Československu a České republice. Zabývá se doposud nepříliš prozkoumanou problematikou vlivu sociologie (a to primárně sociologie české) na vybrané vědní obory v českém prostředí, její intervence a vstupování do nich: konkrétně do uměnovědných oborů, etologie a archeologie. Vz…

Gender a rovnováha moci

In the Czech Republic, women are severely under-represented in decision-making positions. Women make up only 26% of legislators, senior officials and managers, and only 3% of employed women are employed in management positions. These figures have not changed significantly over time. Gender equality infrastructure is almost wholly limited to the central level (Government and Ministries) in the Czech Republic. In the Czech Republic there is currently no legislation or policy aimed at achieving a gender bala…

Frauenerwerbsarbeit, Familienpolitik und Kinderbetreuung. Frühkindliche Betreuung und Bildung in der tschechischen Gesellschaft nach 1945

In this chapter the author has argued that there were four critical junctures that institutionalized a specific path of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in the Czech Republic. Its four critical junctures led to the institutionalization of a specific division of rules and concepts regarding “adequate” ECEC. The already established path of childcare and pre-school education policy places clear limits on the development of new policies.…

The Revenge of History – The Institutional Roots of Post-Communist Family Policy in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland

The authors combine historical and sociological institutional analysis to show that despite thepolitical and socio-economic transformation in 1990s, the institutional development during andbefore the communist era provides the best explanation for current childcare policies in CentralEurope. While most authors have concentrated on policy changes that have taken place in the regionsince 1989, this article concentrates on the historical roots of these policies and shows that today’spolicies are highly influenc…

Neznámé počátky české sociální psychologie. Otakar Machotka: Úloha nevědomého činitele ve společenském chování

Although it is generally considered that the study of social psychology in the then Czechoslovakia commenced in the 1960s, the author here establishes the importance of the virtually forgotten earlier years of the discipline. The first Czech student of social psychology was a prominent sociologist and member of the Prague sociological school, Otakar Machotka (1899-1970), whose interest in matters psychological commenced in the 1940s and whose research into the subject continued during his period of exile in Am…

Measuring phantom borders: the case of Czech/Czechoslovakian electoral geography

Measuring phantom borders: the case of Czech/Czechoslovakian electoral geography

The article focuses on Czech/German ethnic boundary from former interwar Czechoslovakia and its persistence (or transience) in electoral behaviour in selected post-1989 elections. In the analytical part of the article links between populations in regions and electoral results is discussed in order ‘extract’ phantom borders. The analysis draws on both recent GIS data on historical spatial units and historical electoral data to explore the concept of phantom borders. The focus is on phantom borders that …
