The Divisions of Labour and Responsibilities in Business and Home among Women and Men Copreneurs in the Czech Republic

Our chapter focuses on an underrepresented topic in entrepreneurial research: small businesses owned and operated by copreneurs. We examine the divisions of labour and responsibilities in the business and family lives of copreneurs in today's Czech Republic (CR). Copreneurs are romantic couples who own and operate small businesses together. Copreneurs provide a good point for unpacking the interplay among business, family life, and gender. We analyse interview narratives from 12 CR copreneur couples wherein ea…

Genderové inovace v malém podnikání. Strategie kombinace práce a rodiny v podnikatelských párech

Using the so-called embeddedness perspective, this article highlights the importance of context (time, space and institutions) for the direction of current research on the gender structure of entrepreneurship. The authors focus mainly on the effects of institutional context, namely tax and family policies, on business couples (copreneurs). The emphasis is on how these factors and formal institutions, which are reflected in informal gender norms, influence the work-life balance strategies of copreneurs. Based o…

Baťov 1940 – první český empiricky podložený výzkum v oblasti sociologie práce

There is a forgotten chapter in (history of) the Czech sociology of work. In the early 1940s, an empirical study was conducted by Otakar Machotka among employees of the Bata company in Batov (today Otrokovice). One of the leading fi gures of early Czech sociology, Machotka saw the closure of Czech universities during the Second World War as an opportunity to carry out original empirical research devoted to the sociological analysis of the workforce and consisting of a study of the social determination of work…

Demokratie im Dorf - Demokratiequalität in kleinen Schweizer Gemeinden

The scholarly debate on size-specific features of local democratic systems is inconclusive. Contradictory arguments concerning size effects have been formulated for three normative qualities of democracy – participation, accountability and representation and for system capacity. It has been argued that increasing municipal size has the potential to improve the democratic process, but also that municipal fragmentation is the basis for quality of democracy at the local level. The relations between size, system…

GDP and Life Satisfaction in European Countries – Focus on Transition

GDP and Life Satisfaction in European Countries – Focus on Transition

This article contributes to the debate about the impact of the transition on subjective well-being. After reviewing the relevant literature the authors draw on the surveys of the European Values Study of 1991, 1999 and 2008 to describe the trends in life satisfaction in 13 Western and 11 Eastern countries. The analysis finds that life satisfaction levels in transition countries have come to approach those in the West: the ‘rather unhappy’ 1990s were followed by the ‘rather happy’ 2000s. The strengtheni…

Poválečné Spojené státy americké očima českého sociologa. Nepublikovaná reflexe Otakara Machotky v kontextech.

One of the most significant Czech (social science) reflections of the United States was written by the sociologist Otakar Machotka (1899-1970) and was published in 1946. The author prepared an updated version of the chapter for publication reflecting the changes that American society underwent during World War II and its aftermath however, this could not be published and thus remained unknown. This rare find in the archives of the unfinished, yet very significant manuscript as to its contents and methodology a…

Indikátory obav z kriminality v českých sociálněvědních výzkumech

Indikátory obav z kriminality v českých sociálněvědních výzkumech

While fear of crime is frequently discussed internationally, it is currently addressed by only a limited number of Czech studies. The aim of the paper is to present the main methodological concepts that have influenced the research on fear of crime and the design of indicators by which this phenomenon is measured. Furthermore, we evaluate and compare fear of crime measures in three surveys – the Euro-Justis pilot project, the fifth wave of the large-scale international European Social Survey and a survey of …

Kvantitativní a kvalitativní přístupy ve výzkumu životních drah

Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches in Life Course ResearchAbstract: Despite the growing number of statistical analyses of life-history data and a long tradition of biographical research, there is often no communication between these two streams of life-course research. It is possible to examine the life course quantitatively through life histories, which may be used to model synthetic biographies in order to reveal patterns in the timing and sequencing of life events, the durations of states between them,…
