Genderové aspekty neúspěchu českých návrhů zákonů upravujících náhradní výživné na dítě

Many European states, including the Czech Republic, are facing high default rate on child support payments. In combination with a high divorce rate and, in some states, ineffective law enforcement, this has become a dire problem and one that has gender repercussions. In an effort to solve this situation, almost half of EU member states have adopted a system of state advances on child maintenance. The Czech Republic is not one of them. The article discusses why all three attempts to pass such a law failed in th…

Monitoring the transition in the Czech Republic: Data, surveys and studies

The description of post-communist societies is still insufficient and contrasts with the rich knowledge on Western societies. The focus is still on economic and, in particular, macroeconomic data, while social data and reports are rather scarce. With regard to socio-economic studies and analyses, the Czech Republic is even lagging behind the other transition countries of Central Eastern Europe. To ease the access to basic social knowledge on Czech society, the author presents an overview of information sources…

Ideály péče v kontextu nových sociálních rizik

Ideály péče v kontextu nových sociálních rizik

The ability of traditional social policies to protect against poverty and social exclusion is critically discussed in theories about so called new social risks (Taylor-Goodby 2004, Bonoli 2005). These social risks of the postindustrial society are strongly related to the massive entry of women into the labor market. The growth of female employment caused changes not only in the labor market and also in the nature of partner cohabitation and parenthood. Especially the questions who and how should care becam…

Výzkum společenské transformace a česká sociologie

First, the author examines European and world lessons for the study of Czech transformation. Then, he describes legacies of the (mostly communist) past and the risks of transformation: atomisation, demoralisation and materialisation. The main topic is the failure of the social sciences, which isolated themselves instead of engaging in the reform process, verbally governed by mainstream neo-classical economics. In particular, sociology failed to show the moral dimension and embeddedness of economic processes in…

Empirický výzkum chudoby v českých zemích ve třech historických obdobích

This article deals with empirical research on poverty in Czechoslovakia in terms of three distinct phases. Between 1918 and 1948, considerable attention was devoted to poverty, but research possibilities modest. During the 1948 to 1989 period, the communist regime allowed “examinations” of poverty for the purpose of depicting pre-war capitalist Czechoslovakia as an impoverished, class-divided society. After 1989, the opportunities for undertaking research on poverty increased dramatically due to stimulus i…
