Approaching Quality in Survey Research: Towards a Comprehensive Perspective

The article has two goals: (1) bring attention to the problem of inappropriate treatment of survey data quality issues in the social sciences, and (2) introduce the basic principles of contemporary approaches to survey quality. If quality evaluation focuses solely on sampling error, most aspects of data quality are ignored and surveys are assumed to have ‘ideal’ statistical characteristics that are rarely attainable in the pragmatic world of survey fieldwork.…

The study analyses data from the Czech ISSP 2008. First, we analyze the traditional measures of religiosity. We show that the decline in church membership is typical for small churches with mass membership while smaller churches experience a relatively dynamic growth. The first Senate elections raised the question of the purpose of electing a representative body, whose existence have not been clearly explained or defended by its creators. The most common reason voters had for not participating in the 1996 Senate elections was their disagreement with the very its existence. Using empirical data this paper shows that high expectations and support for transformation in the Czech republic persisted despite the initial fall in living standards. Economic and political crisis of 1997-1998 meant a turning point, however. String of several bank bankruptcies, mounting corruption cases and asset stripping in newly privatised companies led to the deterioration of evaluation of course of reforms and to the change of government.
