Mainsprings of ‘Global Feminism’: Framing International Women’s Rights in the UN venues (1975-1995)
Ioana Cîrstocea
Based on multiple archival sources and the critical reading of scholarship related to the four world conferences on women organized by the United Nations between 1975 and 1995, this lecture uses a sociological lens to document transnational feminist activism and solidarities and to mark out actors in competition for framing and advancing gender-equality agendas in the divided geopolitical context of the late Cold War.
Ioana Cîrstocea is a senior researcher in sociology at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), member of CEFRES Prague and CESSP Paris. Her latest publications include Learning Gender after the Cold War. Contentious Feminisms (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) and (coedited with Françoise Thébaud) “Le genre de la guerre froide”, a special issue of Clio. Femmes, Genre, Histoire (2023).
Seminar will be held in English.
