Přesuny voličů ve volbách do Evropského parlamentu v roce 2004 v České republice: Testování některých implikací teorie národních voleb druhého řádu

Using an ecological inference technique this paper examines vote switching in the Czech Republic between the 2002 Chamber elections and 2004 European elections. These results are compared with two individual-level mass survey results. The results of these analyses confirm many of the predictions of SOET and generate further hypotheses for future research.…

Low Membership in Czech Political Parties: Party Strategy or Structural Determinants?

Political parties in the post-communist countries are said to focus on electoral strategies and not on organizational building. Based on the detailed research of Czech political parties, we argue that political parties facing an environment that was hostile to organised partisanship adapted their organizational strategies to make party membership more attractive. Even though they experience a continually falling number of members or at least their stagnation. We show that the main reason for this lies not in p…

The Parliament of the Czech Republic, 1993–2004

The first decade of the Czech democratic Parliament has seen the development of a newly conceptualised, bicameral Parliament in a new State. We identify general tendencies toward stabilisation, similar to Western European parliamentary practices. Another trend is the gradual change from organising the Parliament according to the majority principle to that of consensus. There is also a long-term clash over the powers of the Senate and a gradual erosion of the dominant role of the Chamber of Deputies.…

Do the Options Offered Help Determine the Answers Given? Impact of Response Options Effects on Answers to Party Closeness in Two Post-European Election Surveys, 2004

There has been much scholarly debate over the measurement of party identification and the degree to which closeness to parties is an enduring stable attitude. This research investigates an important puzzle where two post-European election surveys undertaken during June 2004 yield significantly different estimates of citizen closeness to political parties. Building on this insight we argue in this paper that the differences in estimates of party closeness observed tells us important things about the nature of p…

Does Party Organization Still Matter in the Czech Republic? An Examination of the Czech Christian Democratic Party

Using one of the first surveys of party members undertaken in Central and Eastern Europe, this study outlines the socio-demographic and attitudinal profile of Czech Christian Democratic (KDU-ČSL) party members. An exploration of the cohesiveness of KDU-ČSL party members and Czech parliamentary party groupings (PPGs) demonstrates that the power of middle level party elites to exert influence on the legislative process is determined by issue area and party. …

Searching for the Right Organization: Ideology and Party Structure in East-Central Europe

The article examines four centre-right parties in East-Central Europe in order to assess the impact of ideology on party organization and revisit the thesis of organizational weakness in the region. The data collected indicate that, together with electoral success, inherited resources and national context, ideology does indeed shape the style of organization. Analysis of temporal changes uncovers a degree of organizational vitality that is surprising given that the literature on both centre-right and on post-c…

Kdy vymřou voliči KSČM? K věkové struktuře elektorátu KSČM

Since the early nineties it has been widely assumed that the Czech communist party (KSČM) will eventually disappear. To the surprise of many commentators there is currently little evidence to support this ‘decline and disappearance’ thesis. This is the central puzzle addressed in this article. Using cohort analysis an estimate of when electoral support for KSČM will fall below the critical five per cent electoral threshold is presented.…

Vliv volební účasti na zisky jednotlivých politických stran: případ voleb do Poslanecké sněmovny v roce 2006

Text analyses the effect of turnout on the party support of different parties in the Czech Republic. After introduction of the main theories and research strategies of partisan effects of turnout hypotheses concerning this issue are tested. The results show that higher turnout is advantageous for the parties whose voters lack strong party identification (ČSSD and the Green Party). On the other hand, it brings lower gains to parties with disciplined electorate (ODS, KDU-ČSL and partly also for KSČM).…

Výběr kandidátů do Evropského parlamentu v hlavních českých politických stranách

The paper analyses the candidate selection procedure in political parties before the elections to the European Parliament. It focuses on the four main Czech political parties: ČSSD, KDU-ČSL, KSČM and ODS. Findings from the analysis of written documents are compared with the results from a questionnaire survey among the candidates. The candidate selection in ČSSD and ODS was centralised around the narrow central executive with a candidacy closed only to party members. On the other hand, the candidate select…

Co ne/dělat s teorií kartelové strany?

This article is a reaction to a study published in the last issue of Political Science Review about the application of the Katz and Mair theory of cartel party to the Czech experience. In that study, the author illustrates the progressing cartellisation of Czech political parties in 4 areas. This present author rejects the approach that reduces the application of cartel theory to the system level, and argues in favour of the level of individual parties. This present author also rejects the hypothesis that cart…

Conversovy proměnné stále platí aneb Co ovlivňuje sílu vazeb mezi politickými postoji?

This study explores the sources of attitude constraints regarding the role of government in the economy using ISSP 2006. This research confirms that the sources of attitude constraint in the Czech Republic are similar to that observed in Western Europe and the USA. Specifically, class, education, and other social-demographic variables are shown to have very limited effects. Moreover, Converse’s contention that attitude constraints are strongly determined by political involvement, political knowledge or party…

Jak měřit stranickou identifikaci?

This study has two main aims. First, it explores the two main methods used in the Czech Republic to operationalize the concept of party identification. Second this study demonstrates the merits of both methods. Using the Czech Election Study of 2002 this research shows that estimates of partisanship are influenced by how the survey question is formulated. Thereafter, the relationship between the two main variants used in the Czech Republic is presented. On the basis of this research proposes one of the party i…
