Rally and Rage: The Gap between Specific and Pandemic-Specific Support for Governments in Europe.

In times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the public generally expressed high pandemic-specific support for their governments. Analysis based on ESS Round 10 COVID-19 module data from 20 countries shows, however, that there was a gap between pandemic-specific and specific support for governments in European states. A positive gap in favor of pandemic-specific support for governments was found among 52.7% of the respondents, while a negative trend was observed among 24.0% of the respondents. Younger people, those self…

The importance of christianity, customs, and traditions in the national identities of European countries

Christianity has lost its salience, but customs and traditions maintained their importance in forming national identity in Europe. Using the ISSP National Identity 2003 and 2013 data from 17 European countries, this article tests how the salience of Christianity and sharing of national customs and traditions varies according to the share of Muslim and immigrant population, and whether the association changed across time. Multilevel regressions show that the link between the size of the Muslim population and th…

Women’s Parliamentary Representation in the Czech Republic: Does Preference Voting Matter?

Women’s Parliamentary Representation in the Czech Republic: Does Preference Voting Matter?

The U-shaped trajectory of women’s parliamentary representation in Central and Eastern Europe over the post-communist era has generated interest among scholars and non-governmental organizations. One particularly interesting case of the recent increase in women’s parliamentary representation can be found in the Czech Republic. After the initial post-communist drop in representation, the proportion of female members of parliament (MPs) hovered around 15 percent for nearly 15 years. However, in the 2010 parl…

Lost in transition, found in recession? Satisfaction with democracy in Central Europe before and after economic crises

Lost in transition, found in recession? Satisfaction with democracy in Central Europe before and after economic crises

For decades, research on democracy has produced evidence that the peoples of countries in Central Europe are less satisfied with the way democracy works in their countries than people in Western Europe. Using the data from the European Social Survey (ESS) I explore, how satisfaction with the way democracy works (SWD) changed in these countries between 2004 and 2014 and test the impact of satisfaction with the present state of the economy and trust in parliament on SWD. Results of the analysis reveal that peopl…

Vzdělání a národní identita: klesá význam českého původu s dosaženým vzděláním?

Vzdělání a národní identita: klesá význam českého původu s dosaženým vzděláním?

Globální svět čelí vážným společenským problémům, jejichž dopady můžeme vidět i v Evropě.

“This Country is not for Anyone”. Explanations of Low National Pride in the Czech Republic.

“This Country is not for Anyone”. Explanations of Low National Pride in the Czech Republic.

National pride is a group-based and sometimes collective emotion people feel towards their nation-state. It is often measured by the general national pride item in cross-national surveys, and Czechs belong to those nations that express low levels of general national pride in comparison with other nations. It is currently under discussion how much general national pride is influenced by social desirability and how much by specific reasons. The goal of this article is to show specific reasons influencing general…

Significant others and the importance of ancestry for Czech national identity

Significant others and the importance of ancestry for Czech national identity

Nations are viewed as metaphorical families having common ancestors. Czechs, for example, share the legend about a forefather Čech who brought his people into Czechia. Analysing the Czech ISSP 2013 data we examine how the importance of having Czech descent depends on Christian denomination, openness towards immigration, perceived commonality with ‘significant Others’, foreign-born parents, and socio-demographics. Results of the analysis suggest that Czech ancestry is less important part of national identi…

The Role of Politically Relevant Attitudes and Value Orientations in Electoral Decisions. The Czech Republic in 1996

Voting behaviour is generally not so much a matter of choosing one party out of a list of all parties on a ballot paper, but rather a choice between a much smaller number of acceptable parties. Typical voting behaviour may be supposed to be a choice between two parties. It is not a matter of a single important or dominant political attitude or value, but rather a complex process involving many different factors, some of which reinforce each other, while others are in contrast or even conflict. This article tri…
