Independents in local politics – voter turnout, competitiveness, and party-system effects

Independents in local politics – voter turnout, competitiveness, and party-system effects

Denationalisation and the rise of independent lists are strong trends in the local politics of many European countries, but little is known about their implications. Using the example of Czechia, we examine several effects of this trend, focussing on two questions: 1) What impact does the growing number of independents have on voter turnout? 2) How does this trend affect competitiveness and the party system? Using data on electoral results in Czech municipalities over two consecutive elections, we document mob…

From an alternative to a dominant form of local political actors? Independent candidates in the Czech local elections in 2010-2018

From an alternative to a dominant form of local political actors? Independent candidates in the Czech local elections in 2010-2018

This article aims to contribute to the debate on the rise of independents in local politics and the underlying factors driving this trend in Europe by investigating the situation in Czechia, a post-communist country with a highly fragmented local government system. This study uses statistical analyses of electoral data from the 2010, 2014 and 2018 local elections to test the relevance of supply-side and demand-side explanations of the rise of independents. The analysis results show that the political strength …

Chinese food self-provisioning: key sustainability policy lessons hidden in plain sight.

Chinese food self-provisioning: key sustainability policy lessons hidden in plain sight.

Drawing on an exploratory study of urban food self-provisioning (FSP) in China, this article argues that progress in sustainability scholarship can be accelerated by embracing a greater diversity of framings of sustainability. It brings four important empirical findings concerning the prevalence of Chinese urban FSP, the social diversity of its practitioners, their primarily non-economic motivations, and production methods meeting the criteria for organic food that are deployed by more than a third of urban fo…

Střední školy v regionech Česka: ovlivňuje periferní poloha nabídku škol, poptávku po nich a úspěšnost jejich studentů?

The chapter examines the geographic factors that influence supply and demand for different types of secondary schools, and the results that secondary school students achieve in state school-leaving examinations. The authors show that Czech regions differ from each other by the structure of supply of secondary school education, but also by the demand for different types of education. However, regional differences in educational outcomes are relatively low when the results of students from the same type of schoo…

Home-Education in Czechia: Twenty Years of Experience

Home-Education in Czechia: Twenty Years of Experience

The chapter deals with the development of home-education in Czechia since its legalisation in 2004. It analyses the way home-education works in a specific Czech legal and institutional context. An analysis of the available data showed a rapidly growing popularity of home-education since its legalisation. The concentration of home-schoolers under the supervision of just a handful of basic schools specialised in home-education was observed which was enabled by the legalisation of home education given parents are…

Nothing Happens Here…Living Conditions in Rural Peripheries

Nothing Happens Here…Living Conditions in Rural Peripheries

The book focuses on spatialised forms of social inequalities. In particular, it explores the various forms of disadvantage associated with living in rural peripheries. Rural peripheries are relatively sparsely populated places, with poor transport connections to large cities, which don’t profit from the population growth typical of the suburban and peri-urban countryside. At the same time, rural peripheries are affected by a range of social problems. The individual chapters of this book try from different pe…

Socio-Spatial Inequalities in the Czech Metropolitan Areas: The Case of Prague Metro

Socio-Spatial Inequalities in the Czech Metropolitan Areas: The Case of Prague Metro

Social inequalities have increased in the Czech Republic since the collapse of communism. While this has not led to an intensification of territorial inequalities, yet the analysis of the Prague metropolitan area presented in this chapter shows that pressure toward socio-spatial inequalities might increase in the near future. In particular, the abandoning of rent regulations decided by the national government in 2013 is likely to accelerate sorting of residents into affluent and poorer areas. Several features …

Spatial Dimension of Post-1989 Transformation in Czechia

Spatial Dimension of Post-1989 Transformation in Czechia

The book chapter analyzes profound economic and political changes in Czech society after 1989 from spatial perspective. The Czech society was very egalitarian in socio-economic terms at the end of 1980’s. The economic transformation dramatically changed the institutional setting, the ownerships structure and “the rule of the game” in economy, which opened the way for more social diversity and inequality. The cleavage between highly educated and people with low education has been rising both in terms of t…

Geografická reprezentativita poslanců zvolených do Poslanecké sněmovny českého parlamentu za první republiky (1918-1938) a po roce 1989

Election laws regulate the number of deputies who are elected in individual electoral districts, and set them in relation to the population, respectively to the number of voters participating in elections in individual regions. Elected deputies could thus be regarded as political representatives of citizens living in electoral districts. However, under systems of proportional representation, current deputies represent the ideology of the party to which they belong rather than the region. Nevertheless, it makes…

Povolání zvolených poslanců za první republiky a dnes

The article focuses on an analysis of the professions of Czech deputies in the interwar period and in the period after 1989. Based on the theoretical framework of representation we assume that voting decisions are influenced not only by party electoral programs, but also by the individual characteristics of candidates. Candidate professions may indicate whether they are considered to be sufficiently qualified and whether they are considered to represent the interests of voters. The aim of the article is to ana…

Quietly does it: Questioning assumptions about class, sustainability and consumption

Quietly does it: Questioning assumptions about class, sustainability and consumption

This paper questions assumptions about the relationship between class formation, sustainability and patterns of consumption. The empirical elements of the research are based upon qualitative and quantitative time-series research into food self-provisioning and ‘quiet sustainability’ in post socialist Central and Eastern Europe (Poland and the Czech Republic). It considers sustainable practices that are often considered to be taking place ‘in the wrong place and the wrong time’, i.e. they appear anomalo…

The Innovative Regions in the Czech Republic and their Position in the International Labour Market of Highly Skilled Workers

The Innovative Regions in the Czech Republic and their Position in the International Labour Market of Highly Skilled Workers

This paper analyses the possibilities and potential barriers of development of an Island of Innovation in the most innovative regions in a post-Communist country – the Czech Republic. The analysis concludes that the most innovative Czech regions are able to attract highly qualified labour from other locations and do not suffer from a quantitatively important brain drain. On the other hand, mutual interconnections with the most developed Islands of Innovation are weak.…

Existují prostorové kontextové vlivy na volební chování i v relativně nacionalizovaném stranickém systému? Příklad Česka

Existují prostorové kontextové vlivy na volební chování i v relativně nacionalizovaném stranickém systému?

The main goal of the book is to study spatial patterns of voting behaviour in parliamentary elections in Czechia between 1920 and 2006. The book seeks to analyse voting behaviour through studying political preferences expressed by the elections of political parties in the general elections. The four types of questions have been asked: 1. How large are regional differences in electoral results on the territory of Czechia? How the voting patterns look like? 2. Do voting patterns tend to be stable over time or th…

Rental Housing for Young Households in the Czech Republic: Perceptions, Priorities, and Possible Solutions

This paper describes changes in the housing market after the collapse of communism in Central Europe and analyses the current functions and perceptions of the private rental housing in the Czech Republic. It aims to understand why private rental housing is perceived as a sub-optimal housing solution for young adults, whether this affects their family plans, and which policy design could change that. The article uses qualitative research techniques to analyse mental frames, opinions, and attitudes of both poten…

Culture is also in the Czech Republic an important factor in the development of territorial units, regions and municipalities (especially large cities), in connection with changes in the economy and the labor market, the growing emphasis on education, creativity and innovation. On the other hand, culture is associated with quality of life, social cohesion and identification with the region. Some of the results of the project Social and Institutional Conditionality of Culture Development and Cultural Heritage M…
