Measurement Invariance of Subjective Social Status: The Issue of Single-item Questions in Social Stratification Research

Measurement Invariance of Subjective Social Status: The Issue of Single-item Questions in Social Stratification Research

Measures of objective and subjective social status are commonly used in social stratification research. While objective measures have been extensively examined for cross-national comparability, subjective indicators have received less attention. This study aims to address this research gap by investigating the measurement invariance of the three most commonly used single-item measures of subjective social status across many countries. Using a Bayesian approximation approach, we analysed data from three waves o…

Single-item measures of happiness and life satisfaction: the issue of cross-country invariance of popular general well-being measures

Single-item measures of happiness and life satisfaction: the issue of cross-country invariance of popular general well-being measures

Single-item measures of general well-being are increasingly being analysed cross-culturally but without clear evidence of comparability level attainment. The primary objective of this study is to examine the cross-country measurement invariance of the two most common single-item measures—general life satisfaction and happiness—across a large number of countries. For this purpose, 45 data sources from large-scale sample surveys conducted between 1976 and 2018 were used. This study presented a novel techniqu…

Testování psychometrických vlastností a ekvivalence české verze Škály spokojenosti se životem (SWLS) pomocí metod konfirmační faktorové analýzy, teorie odpovědi na položku a bayesovského modelování

Testování psychometrických vlastností a ekvivalence české verze Škály spokojenosti se životem (SWLS) pomocí metod konfirmační faktorové analýzy, teorie odpovědi na položku a bayesovského modelování

The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) is one of the most commonly used instruments for measuring life satisfaction. The aim of this study is to test the psychometric properties of the Czech version of the SWLS using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Item Response Theory (IRT) and to test its invariance between social groups in terms of gender, age, and education using Bayesian modelling on a representative sample of the Czech online population, as the scale has not yet been tested on representative data…

Mezigenerační přenos kulturního kapitálu: sociální determinanty velikosti domácí knihovny

Mezigenerační přenos kulturního kapitálu: sociální determinanty velikosti domácí knihovny

This study focused on the social determinants of the objectified state of cultural capital in adulthood. It examined whether intergenerational transmission is still the dominant determinant of the size of a person’s home library in post-communist Czech society. We applied structural equation modelling to data (N = 1958) from the Czech Household Panel Survey (CHPS) and found that while the size of a person’s home library was significantly affected by the size of the parents’ library, the parents’ educat…

Fenomén #scicomm: využití big data a jejich analýzy při sledování komunikace vědy na internetových stránkách českých výzkumných organizací

This study focused on science communication on the websites of Czech research institutions. Particularly, we inquired to what extent Czech science is shared with the public on the Internet and what differences can be found between the websites of social and natural science institutions. Textual analysis revealed that on the scientific websites, terms like “science” and “popularization” occurred together with references to scientific institutions, study, and research. In the case of natural sciences, th…

Civic Values in the Czech Republic in a European context

Civic Values in the Czech Republic in a European context

Our chapter aims to describe the contemporary civic values of the people of Czech Republic within a European perspective. The following indicators have been chosen to represent activities, attitudes, and values that may sustain a democratic civic political culture: political interest, feelings of political efficacy and active participation in civil society and politics. Also relevant are trust in people, life satisfaction, support for democracy and confidence in the political institutions of society as well as…

The effect of parents’ education and income on children’s school performance: the mediating role of the family environment and children’s characteristics

The effect of parents’ education and income on children’s school performance: the mediating role of the family environment and children’s characteristics

This study investigated the effects of family socioeconomic status on children’s academic performance as mediated by their home environment and children’s characteristics, with special attention to gender differences. Structural modeling was applied to a nationally representative Czech Household Panel Survey data (2015/2016). The results revealed that socioeconomic status had no significant direct effects on school performance after controlling for other family aspects. The effects of parental education an…

Mediation effects in the relationship between cultural capital and academic outcomes

Mediation effects in the relationship between cultural capital and academic outcomes

Following recent literature, this study focused on the mediating mechanisms through which cultural capital leads to students’ higher grades and academic ability. Structural modeling was applied to 2018 CZ_PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) data and the results showed that students’ family highbrow cultural resources and reading interest have indirect positive effects on their reading ability and school grades via non-cognitive skills (i.e., students’ aspirations and self-concept in rea…

Gender differences in the link between family scholarly culture and parental educational aspirations

Gender differences in the link between family scholarly culture and parental educational aspirations

This study investigated family scholarly culture’s effects on parental educational aspirations, with special attention paid to gender differences based on the ideas of stratified parenting and a sociocultural approach to parenting. Two-level structural modeling was applied to nationally representative Czech Household Panel Survey data from 2015 – 2016. Overall, our analysis did not find an independent effect from scholarly culture on parental educational aspirations after controlling for several socioecono…

Nový přístup v testování ekvivalence na příkladu měření subjektivního blahobytu

Nový přístup v testování ekvivalence na příkladu měření subjektivního blahobytu

Survey-based measures of subjective well-being are increasingly often analyzed cross-culturally. However, international comparison of these measures requires measurement invariance. Therefore, the major goal of this study was to investigate the cross-country comparability of the 5-item subjective well-being scales used in the International Social Survey Programme (2011, 2017). This study applied both the traditional exact and the more recent Bayesian approximate approach to assessed whether the subjective well…

Individual’s cultural capital: intergenerational transmission, partner effect, or individual merit?

Individual’s cultural capital: intergenerational transmission, partner effect, or individual merit?

For decades, social stratification research has focused on the effect of families’ cultural capital on their offspring’s educational attainment. However, few studies have focused on the shaping of individuals’ cultural capital. This study aimed to examine the effects of family background, individual, partner, and household characteristics on individuals’ reading preferences and cultural participation. Structural equation modeling was applied to Czech Household Panel Survey (CHPS) data (N=6,040). The re…

Returns to bachelor’s and master’s degree in tertiary education: the case of the Czech Republic after the Bologna Process

Returns to bachelor’s and master’s degree in tertiary education: the case of the Czech Republic after the Bologna Process

The primary objective of this study was to analyse the development of the effect of the bachelor’s and master’s tertiary degree on both respondents’ wage and socioeconomic status in the Czech labour market ten years after the Bologna Process. For the purposesof the study, structural modelling was applied using the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC, 2010–2017) and Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC, 2011/12) data. The results revealed…

The cross-country and cross-time measurement invariance of positive and negative affect scales: Evidence from European Social Survey

The cross-country and cross-time measurement invariance of positive and negative affect scales: Evidence from European Social Survey

Survey-based measures of subjective well-being are increasingly often analyzed cross-culturally. However, international comparison of these measures requires measurement invariance. Therefore, the major goal of this study is to investigate the cross-country and cross-time comparability of the 4-item positive and 7-item negative affect scales used in European Social Survey Round 3 (2006) and Round 6 (2012). This study applies both the traditional exact and the more recent Bayesian approximate approach to assess…

Vztah mezi individuálními charakteristikami a vysokoškolským vzděláním: role osobnosti, fyzické atraktivity a sebehodnocení

Vztah mezi individuálními charakteristikami a vysokoškolským vzděláním: role osobnosti, fyzické atraktivity a sebehodnocení

Focusing on a subject largely neglected in mainstream Czech social stratification research so far, this study seeks to examine to what extent tertiary educational attainment and educational mobility are affected by personal factors, such as personality traits, physical attractiveness, and self-esteem. It is based on data drawn from a large-scale representative survey carried out in the Czech Republic (Neglected Human Capital Dimensions 2015) as the second follow-up to the OECD PIAAC project. The results show t…

Returns to cognitive skills: new evidence from 14 nations

This study examines the role of cognitive skills on labor market outcomes in 14 developed countries. In contrast to standard Mincer-type regressions, we utilize a structuralmodeling approach that can take into account different types of skills on different economic outcomes. The results, based on data from the OECD PIAAC project, providestrong evidence that the income returns to adult cognitive skills are substantially large across the OECD, net of education, occupational status, gender and family background.H…

Globální svět čelí vážným společenským problémům, jejichž dopady můžeme vidět i v Evropě.

Beaty still matters: The role of attractiveness in labour market outcomes

The main objective of the study is threefold: first, to examine the role of attractiveness in the Czech labour market second, to assess gender differences in returns of attractiveness and third, to show that the positive association between attractiveness and earnings does not disappear even when cognitive skills, social background, occupational status and individual characteristics are controlled for. The study uses data from the first large-scale sociological survey focusing on attractiveness carried out in …
