Childcare Preferences of Parents in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic

Childcare Preferences of Parents in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. In spite of recent economic and social developments in the EU and related pressures on labour market participation, family policies in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic are very familialistic. With the combination of long-term leaves and limited access to institutional childcare the reconciliation of parenting and work remains an irresolvable task that has implications for gender equality and specifically for the participa…

Women in management of small enterprises: Co-inspiration between social and conventional enterprises to promote equal access to decision-making positions in six European countries

The comparative study focused on the access of women to the decision-making positions in the corporate sector that represents the problem almost in all European countries. To understand the situation in small companies, in 2014, we conducted a qualitative research study on opportunities and barriers for women in management of small conventional and social enterprises in six countries (i.e. Belgium, France, the Czech Republic, Finland and Italy). This European comparative study has shown how the various measu…

Blending, credit, context: Doing business, family and gender in Czech and US copreneurships

Blending, credit, context: Doing business, family and gender in Czech and US copreneurships

Utilising a comparative/doing gender approach and thematic narrative methodology, we examine how copreneurs – romantic business partners – construct business and caring responsibilities. We interviewed male-female partners separately from 12 couples in the Czech Republic (CR) and 13 in the United States (US), countries with diverse entrepreneurial histories, norms and family policies. We ask: (1) How do copreneurs construct/‘do’ business and family? (2) How do copreneurs credit contributions of partner…

Education for Sustainable Development Goals in public debate: The importance of participatory research in reflecting and supporting the consultation process in developing a vision for Czech education

Education for Sustainable Development Goals in public debate: The importance of participatory research in reflecting and supporting the consultation process in developing a vision for Czech education

The paper reviews recent theoretical discussions on education for sustainable development and competence based teaching, and relates them to the international policy processes of the Sustainable Development Goals implementation where ‘the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development’ are expressed in the SDG 4.7. It shows the importance of the public debate for fostering shared understanding and acceptance of strategies for educational change within the ongoing development of Agenda 203…

The legacy of equality and the weakness of law: Within-Job Gender Wage Inequality in the Czech Republic

Using firm-level data from the Czech Republic in the years 1998, 2002, and 2004, we examine whether the introduction of legislative measures for gender equality connected with the accession to the European Union had a significant effect on gender wage inequality. The central conclusion of our analysis is that within-job wage inequality plays a significant role in the Czech labour market, and that there were no substantive changes during the period studied. Czech women doing the same jo…

Women's Entrepreneurial Realities in the Czech Republic and the United States: Gender Gaps, Racial/Ethnic Disadvantages, and Emancipatory Potential

Women entrepreneurs are not a homogenous group, intersectional approaches are essential to grasp how multiple dimensions of entrepreneurs’ social identities converge to frame opportunities. Our study focuses on the experiences and ambitions of small, purposively-selected samples of women business owners from two countries – the United States (US) and Czech Republic (CR). A combined contextual embeddedness/intersectional approach to entrepreneurship suggests that interwoven dimensions of identities position…

Cultural repertoires of the division of labour market and family responsibilities between Slovak entrepreneurial couples and their gendered nature

Cultural repertoires of the division of labour market and family responsibilities between Slovak entrepreneurial couples and their gendered nature

The article is based on the contemporary trend in entrepreneurship research, which stresses context. We deal primarily with the family embeddedness of entrepreneurship, which is easily studied in the case of copreneurial couples, where the link is the tightest. In our article we use the term copreneurs as “romantic” partners involved in the same business. The degree of involvement in the same business is self-defined. In our opinion, this approach is most suited to describing invisible and unofficial roles…
