Politicisation of the Domestic: Populist Narratives About Covid‐19 Among Influencers

The article analyses the proliferation of narratives about Covid‐19 as an orchestrated political event among female lifestyleinfluencers on Czech Instagram. As the Covid‐19 pandemic turned even the most basic everyday activities into politicallyloaded questions, the boundaries between lifestyle, domestic, and political content posted by influencers became increas‐ingly blurred. The article explores this process of “politicisation of the domestic” with a focus on (a) the gendered characterof influence…

Cultures of Authenticity

Authenticity has become a buzzword for our times. Much of the travel industry is built around the provision of ‘authentic’ experiences, global brands fight to be seen as ‘authentic’ and social media platforms are awash with arguments about the authenticity of this post or that vlogger. But what do we mean by authenticity? And why have these debates grown so dramatically in the last two decades? This collection explores the complex and at times controversial idea of authenticity. Addressing the concept f…

Rodičovství a genderové mzdové rozdíly ve vybraných kontextech trhu práce před pandemií covidu-19 a na jejím začátku

The article addresses the influence of parenthood on the gender pay gap (GPG). The linked employer − employee data available that is suitable for a detailed GPG analysis, does not include parenthood in Czechia. It is thus possible to examine the relationship between the GPG and parenthood via this data only indirectly through the use of data on age. Information System on Average Earnings (ISPV) data allows for the monitoring of compliance with the legal standard that requires equal pay for equal work. The an…

“We Are in Control”: Instagram Influencers and the Proliferation of Conspiracy Narratives in Digital Spaces

Female spiritual influencers on Instagram engage with conspiracy content and appeal to the issue of control over female bodies to bridge the gap between mainstream and fringe online spaces. I use the concept of “third space” to analyse the dynamics of Instagram communities around spiritual influencers and highlight how these communities operate as spaces for political discussion while simultaneously appearing apolitical from the outside. Analysing data from participant observation and interviews with six f…

Ups and downs in finance, ups without downs in inequality

The upswing in finance in recent decades has led to rising inequality, but do downswings in finance lead to a symmetric decline in inequality? We analyze the asymmetry of the effect of ups and downs in finance, and the effect of increased capital requirements and the bonus cap on national earnings inequality. We use administrative employer–employee-linked data from 1990 to 2019 for 12 countries and data from bank reports, from 2009 to 2017 in 13 European countries. We find a strong asymmetry in the effect of…

Gender a změny v dělbě práce v domácnostech s dětmi v době pandemie covidu-19

Gender a změny v dělbě práce v domácnostech s dětmi v době pandemie covidu-19

The article ties in with the scholarship on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on gender equality. Based on a qualitative analysis of interviews with parents of children under 12, we examine the processes that led to the increase or dismantling of the gender division of labour in families during the first nationwide lockdown. Using the concepts of path dependency and ‘doing’ and ‘undoing’ gender, we explain the strategies couples with children used to adapt to the enormous increase in reproductive wor…

Sisterhood in 5D: Conspirituality and Instagram Aesthetics

The article explores the proliferation of conspiracies in female dominated spaces on Instagram, specifically among spiritual influencers who base their authority and influence on a combination of wellness culture practices and conspirituality narratives. It uses the example of a prominent Czech spiritual influencer Helena Houdová to illustrate the blending of spiritual, aspirational and conspiracy content among Instagram influencers and it argues that the specific aesthetics of Instagram conspiracies needs t…

Péče jako individuální odpovědnost a prohloubení ekonomického znevýhodnění sólo matek v pandemii covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic had a particularly severe impact on people in a vulnerable position, such as solo mothers living alone with their children. In this article I use an intersectional approach in order to understand how their different positions in life affected their ability to cope with the crisis situation. I present a longitudinal qualitative study of the situation of solo mothers in the Czech Republic during the Covid-19 crisis, based on repeated interviews with women from three Czech regions. The preli…

Cash for Care as Special Money: The Meaning and Uses of the Care Allowance in Close Relationships in the Czech Republic

Investigating what happens when money in the form of a cash-for-care benefit enters family relationships, this article examines long-term family care in the Czech Republic where a “care allowance” was introduced in 2007. It compares two qualitative studies: one of adult children providing care to their parents and the other of mothers caring for a disabled child in both cases, the adults are entitled to the benefit. The studies used narrative and in-depth interviews with forty-eight informal caregivers. Da…
