New Phenomenon: Roadside Memorials

Roadside memorials have become a common feature in the Czech landscape over the last couple of decades. Such memorials are usually erected as permanent structures intended to remind travellers of both the accident and the deceased, the majority of whom are young men. Roadside memorials provide a relatively new and personalised form of expressing grief that extends private mourning into the public domain. However, this approach to coping with the death of a friend or family member is in sharp contrast with th…

Jak náboženství ovlivňuje rodinný život? Rozdíly v chování a postojích k rodině mezi českými věřícími a nevěřícími

Religion forms society in a significant way and provides the basic norms of social behaviour. Even if in present-day Czech society almost two-thirds of the population does not belong to any religious denomination, one cannot deny that this society still relates to Christian norms and value. This can be distinctly observed in the family sphere. Attitudes on families and familial behaviour have, however, changed in this secular society. The article observes, on the basis of data from Generations and Gender Surve…

"V žáru lásky se život započal - v žáru ohně se končí." Čtyři pohledy na vývoj kremačního hnutí v české společnosti

The authors analyse the following mutually reliant but, at least as far as Czech society is concerned, not always directly dependent aspects of the cremation movement in the 20th century: the growth in and impact of pro-cremation propaganda, the establishment of new crematoria, the spread in the popularity of cremation as a method of disposal throughout society and changes in the rituals associated with it. Contemporary Czech society has (one of) the highest cremation rates in Europe, a fact which is connected…

Smrt a umírání: opomíjené téma veřejných politik

Death and dying is one of the overlooked areas in the Czech Republic. The prolonging of dying in neo-modern/ late-modern societies requires not just medical care but also very important social care that is a major factor in maintaining high quality of life right to the end. Czech social policy has so far only dealt with death as a marginal topic and it would be good if it learnt from experiences abroad.…

Perceived Corruption, Distributive Justice, and the Legitimacy of the System of Social Stratification in the Czech Republic

This article examines the relationship between social justice norms and the perceived legitimacy of the social stratification system in the Czech Republic. Despite the fact that meritocratic values have remained the dominant part of ideology in the Czech Republic throughout the transformation process, those values have played only a very minor role in fostering evaluations of system legitimacy, such as perceptions of system closure and widespread inequality. This article argues that perceived corruption is the…
