Political Leadership in Issue Networks: How Mayors Rule Their World?

Political Leadership in Issue Networks: How Mayors Rule Their World?

This book studies political leadership at the local level, based on data from a survey of the mayors of cities of more than 10,000 inhabitants in 29 European countries carried out between 2014 and 2016. The book compares these results with those of a similar survey conducted ten years ago. From this comparative perspective, the book examines how to become a mayor in Europe today, the attitudes of these politicians towards administrative and territorial reforms, their notions of democracy, their political prior…

Women’s Parliamentary Representation in the Czech Republic: Does Preference Voting Matter?

Women’s Parliamentary Representation in the Czech Republic: Does Preference Voting Matter?

The U-shaped trajectory of women’s parliamentary representation in Central and Eastern Europe over the post-communist era has generated interest among scholars and non-governmental organizations. One particularly interesting case of the recent increase in women’s parliamentary representation can be found in the Czech Republic. After the initial post-communist drop in representation, the proportion of female members of parliament (MPs) hovered around 15 percent for nearly 15 years. However, in the 2010 parl…

Schützova koncepce sociální intersubjektivity

Schutz’s concept of intersubjectivity departs from radical, philosophical analyses of the constitution of the other (alter ego) in my consciousness. Instead, he takes the existence of the other and his or her subjectivity for granted and investigates the intersubjective relations of understanding and action among individuals. The shifting of phenomenological lifeworld theory from philosophy to sociology enables Schütz to study social interaction and order. The article identifies the premises of this concept…

Energy and the public. How societies communicate and decide about energy issues?

Energy and the public. How societies communicate and decide about energy issues?

As people living in the EU states we take it for granted that a source of electricity will be there whenever we need it. It is a considerably less self-evident matter, how the electricity we rely on is supposed to be produced and distributed. The energy sector stands at a crossroads today and newly emerging options of energy strategies challenge the old ways of doing the business. This module approaches technical students as potential future energy experts, who will need to integrate social or societal aspects…

Philosophy and Ethics of Energy Development. What are the most general questions concerning our attitudes to energy technologies?

Energy production and energy facilities and projects are based on scientific knowledge and they require employment of various kinds of technologies. This links energy development with a more general view of natural sciences and technologies and their function in contemporary advanced societies. The impact of technologies on everyday lives of individuals, groups and communities has been growing unprecedentedly in recent decades. It does not matter whether we like it or not, whether we are techno-enthusiasts or …

Generative hermeneutics: proposal for an alliance with critical realism

Generative hermeneutics: proposal for an alliance with critical realism

This article deals with the recent interest shown by critical realists in the study of generative mechanisms in sociology and proposes stronger integration of hermeneutics into this theoretical approach. There are important differences between realism and hermeneutics. While realism strives to overcome the extremes of empiricism and interpretivism with a new version of naturalism, hermeneutics bases its explanations of society on research into meanings. The question is whether underlining these differences is …

Is marriage an outdated institution in the Czech Republic?

In the Czech Republic, the context for starting a family has changed dramatically since the fall of communism in late 1989. Fewer Czechs are getting married, and if they do, they do so at a later age. Cohabitation has become a long-term household arrangement in which children are raised. Today, marriage is not the only socially acceptable form of a shared life among Czech couples. In addition, views about cohabitation, marriage and when is the right time for marriage had become more variable.…
