International Relations in the Czech Republic: Where Have All the Women Gone?

In this article, we strive to explore what are some of the causes of the scarcity of women researchers in Czech international relations in comparison to the representation of women students in the field. To answer this question, we analysed a set of semi-structured interviews with international relations students and accessible syllabi using the conceptual framework of Sandra Harding´ s gendered universe, which differentiates between the operations of gender on the individual, structural and symbolic level. W…

Muži do škol? Ano! Ale…: Potřeba mužů v primárním vzdělávání

In recent public discussions in Europe on the advantages of mixed-gender teams, many voices have been calling for more men in primary education. The urgent need to get more male teachers into primary education exists also in the Czech Republic. In a highly feminised environment, the prevailing view is that we need more male role models and male teachers who are already in kindergartens and elementary schools are presented as unique and exceptional. Behind this idea lies the belief that female teachers need to …

Scenes in and outside the library: Continuity and change in contesting feminist knowledge on the semi-periphery

Feminist sociological research is well institutionalised in the Czech Republic with two major departments at the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences. However, it would be wrong to believe that the knowledge produced by them goes uncontested. In the article, we analyse the de-legitimizing strategies used to discredit and denounce such knowledge in two particular cases that entered the media in 2015 and 2017. In the first case, feminist sociologists criticized an exhibition of photographs of …

Muži učitelé v mateřských školách: konstrukce maskulinity ve feminizovaném prostředí

This article focuses on the topic of men working in feminised jobs and specifically on male teachers in kindergartens, who are in a specific position given that they are relatively few in number. There are several advantages for them in this position: they are accepted with enthusiasm and with expectations of change. This treatment gives them an opportunity to construct their own and relatively 'elite' version of masculinity, which is superior just to the femininity of the female teachers, but also to other ve…

Odlišnosti v komunikaci z genderové perspektivy: "Skutečná" dívka rovná se "slušná" dívka

This article is focused on gender expectations linked with girl's speech. Stereotypical ideas regarding gender-specific behavior are still prevalent in today's society and preconceptions which define "lady-like" character, as well as what constitutes the appropriate speech of a "po-lite girl", still exist. This article detects the expectations linked with girls' speech as perceived by young people in contemporary society and describes the ways in which girls live up to these expectations. Mixed methods were us…

More Money, Less Housework? Relative Resources and Housework in the Czech Republic

More Money, Less Housework? Relative Resources and Housework in the Czech Republic

The paper explores the association between housework, earnings, and education. In contrast to the majority of existing studies from Western countries, this paper tests the bargaining theory in the Czech Republic. Given the high female labor force participation coupled with a tendency for women to drop out of the labor market for several years after childbirth, the country provides an interesting context to test the theory. Using data from the first wave of the Czech Household Panel, we apply multilevel mixed-e…

How Does “The Share of the Pie” Matter? European Empirics on the Financial Satisfaction of Partners

How Does “The Share of the Pie” Matter? European Empirics on the Financial Satisfaction of Partners

This paper aims to extend the knowledge of the relationship between within-couple income distribution and partners’ financial satisfaction, using data from the EU-SILC 2013 for 15 European countries, for the first time including data from Eastern Europe. We find that men’s preferences typically concur with the “traditional” male-breadwinner family model, as husband’s satisfaction decreases with a larger female share of household income. In contrast, in nine countries, men’s satisfaction actually in…

Konstrukce tradice české reformace v novodobých protestantských církvích

Modern Protestant churches, approved by the Patent of Toleration issued by Joseph II, could not (and in many respects they did not want to) continue the heritage of Bohemian Reformation. However, such legacy appeared thorough the “long” 19th century, and at its end it was emphasized by national movement and political programmes of several political parties. At the beginning of the 20th century, the importance of the above legacy grew significantly, and culminated after the formation of Czechoslovakia: most…

Naopak, v řadě oblastí lze konstatovat mírně negativní tendence, tedy pokles zastoupení žen a zvyšování převahy mužů.Autorský tým vycházel z průběžných statistických výkazů Ministerstva školství, mládeže a tělovýchovy…

Malý slovník českých nekatolických náboženských osobností 20. a 21. století

Malý slovník českých nekatolických náboženských osobností 20. a 21. století

Research on religion has been neglected in Czech academia for a long time, one of the major debts was absence of a biographical encyclopedia of modern religious figures. Such dictionaries are available for all comparable Central European countries, in the Czech case there was at least a dictionary of Roman Catholics. Only the extensive research and analytical work of the team made it possible to publish a more extensive and heuristically more difficult encyclopedia of other religionists. The present dictionary …

Mobilities and commons unseen: spatial mobility in homeless people explored through the analysis of GPS tracking data

The aim of this study was to examine the spatial mobility of homeless people in urban areas, exploring homeless mobility, its drivers, limits and links to personal attributes, and whether there is an association between the extent of spatial activity and an individual’s housing situation. To our knowledge, there has been no prior exhaustive attempt to explore the spatial mobility of homeless people using Global Positioning System (GPS) location devices. The theoretical background of the research was…

Využití metody Respondent-Driven Sampling u populace lidí bez domova: základní principy, aplikace a praktická doporučení

Využití metody Respondent-Driven Sampling u populace lidí bez domova: základní principy, aplikace a praktická doporučení

Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is a survey method used to create samples of populations that are hidden and hard to reach. Even though the method has been used since the 1990s in studies internationally, it has not yet been used in Czech research. The RDS methodology tends to be described presented as a statistical tool that makes it possible to produce unbiased estimates of hidden or hard-to-reach populations, and at the same as a tool with which to effectively recruit respondents from the given populations…

Subjective Perceptions of Poverty and Objective Economic Conditions: Czechia and Slovakia a Quarter Century After the Dissolution of Czechoslovakia

Subjective Perceptions of Poverty and Objective Economic Conditions: Czechia and Slovakia a Quarter Century After the Dissolution of Czechoslovakia

Studies into the relation between subjective perceptions of individuals and objective economic conditions have usually resulted in ambiguous empirical findings. Whilst most studies perceive subjective welfare as being operationalized by indicators of happiness or life satisfaction, we narrow the approach to an economic domain of subjective well-being— perceptions of poverty. We argue that our approach better reflects the economic dimension, as the former may include numerous non-economic domains. We use a ca…

Marital Status, Smoking and Binge Drinking in Comparative Perspective

The paper explores cross-national differences in the link between marital status, smoking and binge drinking. Using the International Social Survey Data (ISSP Health and Health Care) from 2011, it tests whether the gap between married and single individuals depends on the prevalence of the vice in the society. This hypothesis was partly corroborated for binge drinking in both male and female samples though the link between marriage and alcohol consumption is reversed in the high prevalence context. In case of …

Two faces of peripherality: labour markets, poverty, and population dynamics in Hungary and Czechia

Two faces of peripherality: labour markets, poverty, and population dynamics in Hungary and Czechia

This study investigates socioeconomic peripherality in Hungary and Czechia. Despite the current attention devoted to peripheries in post-communist societies, the authors argue that there is a lack of data-driven international comparisons of the socio-spatial outcomes of peripheralisation processes. In the study, the situations in Hungary and Czechia are compared to assess the validity of peripheralisation as a mutually reinforcing economic, social and demographic decline specifically affecting rural areas. Fi…

Subkultura kulturních kreativců a alternativní životní styl v Pravém domácím časopisu

The paper focuses on Czech alternative lifestyles and subcultures that cannot be defined by music and youth, hence using the concept of cultural creatives (Ray – Anderson 2000). This subculture has been formed by a convergence of social movements and countercultures since the 1960s. Based on a qualitative media analysis of Czech alternative lifestyle magazine (Pravý domácí časopis – Real Homemade Magazine) which represents and co-creates alternative lifestyles and values with focus on environmental, …

Nothing Happens Here…Living Conditions in Rural Peripheries

Nothing Happens Here…Living Conditions in Rural Peripheries

The book focuses on spatialised forms of social inequalities. In particular, it explores the various forms of disadvantage associated with living in rural peripheries. Rural peripheries are relatively sparsely populated places, with poor transport connections to large cities, which don’t profit from the population growth typical of the suburban and peri-urban countryside. At the same time, rural peripheries are affected by a range of social problems. The individual chapters of this book try from different pe…

Teorie sociální dezorganizace a její význam pro výzkum prostorové podmíněnosti kriminality

Teorie sociální dezorganizace a její význam pro výzkum prostorové podmíněnosti kriminality

Research on thesocio-spatial analysis of crime reaches deep into the past. However, one of the first major sociological theories that influenced the scientific field of criminology is the social disorganization theory of Shaw and McKay, who studied the impact of structural factors on neighborhood crime in the Chicago metropolitan area. This article introduces the original concept of social disorganization theory, describes the reasons for its criticism in the 70 ́s and the causes of its subsequent resurgence …
