Sto let Českobratrské církve evangelické a Církve československé (husitské): Náboženské organizace, společenská poptávka a racionalita řízení

The article analyses organisational development of two main established non-Catholic churches in the Czech Lands, i.e. the Protestant Church of the Czech Brethren (Českobratrská církev evangelická) and the Czechoslovak (Hussite) Church (Církev československá /husitská/), since their establishment in 1918 and 1920 to the present. Author shows that particular congregations were established more or less according to public demand in the first decades, but the structure of the churches remained in large de…

The results of research on domestic labour consistently show that women are responsible for more housework tasks than men. At the same time, there is growing public awareness of gender role equality. However, there is little evidence on whether there has been any change in the perception of fairness in the division of housework and whether this view differs in different families. Using data from the ISSP 2002 and 2011/2012, this article seeks to explore the relationship between the division of housework and it…

Democracy Under Stress. Changing Perspectives on Democracy, Governance and Their Measurement

Democracy Under Stress. Changing Perspectives on Democracy, Governance and Their Measurement

Democracy, defined as liberal pluralism, is under stress worldwide. Pluralistic democratic institutions: a free press, civil society and the rule of law all seem to be under attack. Democracies are being hollowed out from within while preserving the fundamental facade of elections. The strength of this book is in providing a range of perspectives on the study of democracy under stress. The authors, renown scholars of democratic theory and democracy in the Central and Eastern Europe, highlight the potential of d…

Postsekularismus po česku? Ne/religiozita současné české společnosti mezi Východem a Západem

Th e article contributes to critical analyses of contemporary European religion and (rather loose) conceptualisations of post-secularism. Return of religion into the public space, which may be called post-secularism, is visible and growing even in predominantly outchurched Czech Republic. However, the very concept of post-secularism is too broad to be used as an analytical category. Th e author thus tries to operationalise it using functional diff erentiation between (social types of) churches and Davie’s id…

Jsou místa koncentace kriminality společensky nejškodlivější? Nový analytický přístup pro prevenci kriminality a policejní praxi.

Jsou místa koncentace kriminality společensky nejškodlivější? Nový analytický přístup pro prevenci kriminality a policejní praxi.

The aim of this paper is to introduce crime harmspots as a new analytical approach measuring the societal impact of crime at places. The crime harm approach has a clear practical applicability in policing and crime prevention. Increasing utilisation of geo-localised crime data and validity of law of crime concentration at places enables us to measure societal impact of crime at the level of individual street segments. The current research is based on geo-localised crime data for medium-sized Czech city …

In the paper we ask what attitudes people have in the Czech Republic towards women in politics and their descriptive representation, how these attitudes have changed across time, and what factors are associated with these changes. We draw mainly on a survey carried out in 2014, and we compare its data with survey data collected in 2006. The analysis indic…

Neither magic bullet nor a mere tool: negotiating multiple logics of the checklist in healthcare quality improvement

Over two decades, the checklist has risen to prominence in healthcare improvement. This paper contributes to the debate between its proponents and critics, making the case for an STS-informed understanding of the checklist that demonstrates the limitations of both the ‘checklist-as-panacea’ and ‘checklist-as-socially-determined’ positions. Attending to the checklist as a socio-material object endowed with affordances that call upon clinicians to act (Hutchby 2001, Allen 2012), the study revisits the ef…

Religious Situation in Contemporary Czech Society

The study deals with the analysis of the religious situation in Czech society after 1989. The starting point is the analysis of the broader historical and sociopolitical context. The study itself examines an analysis of the key census data from 1991, 2001, and 2011, together with the results of research explicitly focused on the religion and religious behavior of the Czech population. These are mainly international studies, such as the EVS, ISSP or AUFBRUCH, and Czech research in the field of DIN. The study al…

Vnímání příjmových nerovností a preference ohledně rozdělení příjmů v České republice

Vnímání příjmových nerovností a preference ohledně rozdělení příjmů v České republice

Representative survey of adult population is used to analyse perceptions of existing income inequality and preferences for ideal income distribution in the Czech Republic. On average, Czechs view the distribution of disposable income as more unequal than it actually is. This biased perception results from underestimating total income shares belonging to bottom quintiles and overestimating total income share belonging to the top income quintile. Whereas majority of Czechs prefer some level of income stratificat…
