The legacy of equality and the weakness of law: Within-Job Gender Wage Inequality in the Czech Republic

Using firm-level data from the Czech Republic in the years 1998, 2002, and 2004, we examine whether the introduction of legislative measures for gender equality connected with the accession to the European Union had a significant effect on gender wage inequality. The central conclusion of our analysis is that within-job wage inequality plays a significant role in the Czech labour market, and that there were no substantive changes during the period studied. Czech women doing the same jo…

Ties, sites and irregularities: pitfalls and benefits in using respondent-driven sampling for surveying a homeless population

Ties, sites and irregularities: pitfalls and benefits in using respondent-driven sampling for surveying a homeless population

Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is a survey method for hidden populations and, as such, it offers a suitable approach for sampling the homeless. Surprisingly, the practical use of RDS in surveying homeless populations has only sporadically been described in the professional literature so far, and the specifics of using RDS for sampling this group have not been reflected in depth. The goal of the article is to investigate how three specific concerns, namely the transitional character of social ties among the h…

Schicksalswende?

Being a chaplain in the Czech Republic is an uncertain role. The country has a very low rate of religiosity and little trust in churches. The chaplains who provide spiritual care in the army, hospitals, and prisons face several sources of uncertainty: they must negotiate their position within the institutional structure gain the acceptance of their clients, and often work with only little support. In this article, the author focuses on strategies the Czech chaplains devise to overcome these uncertainties. The …

Women's Entrepreneurial Realities in the Czech Republic and the United States: Gender Gaps, Racial/Ethnic Disadvantages, and Emancipatory Potential

Women entrepreneurs are not a homogenous group, intersectional approaches are essential to grasp how multiple dimensions of entrepreneurs’ social identities converge to frame opportunities. Our study focuses on the experiences and ambitions of small, purposively-selected samples of women business owners from two countries – the United States (US) and Czech Republic (CR). A combined contextual embeddedness/intersectional approach to entrepreneurship suggests that interwoven dimensions of identities position…

Cultural repertoires of the division of labour market and family responsibilities between Slovak entrepreneurial couples and their gendered nature

Cultural repertoires of the division of labour market and family responsibilities between Slovak entrepreneurial couples and their gendered nature

The article is based on the contemporary trend in entrepreneurship research, which stresses context. We deal primarily with the family embeddedness of entrepreneurship, which is easily studied in the case of copreneurial couples, where the link is the tightest. In our article we use the term copreneurs as “romantic” partners involved in the same business. The degree of involvement in the same business is self-defined. In our opinion, this approach is most suited to describing invisible and unofficial roles…

Private Rental Housing in Transition Countries

Private Rental Housing in Transition Countries

This book presents an overview of private rented housing in selected new EU member states and other transition countries – a topic scarcely researched to date, as it is largely part of the informal economy, and consequently often invisible to official statistics. Part I presents the private rented sector in Western and Northern European countries, the history of private renting under socialism in Central and Eastern Europe, and thematic issues such as restitution and marginalized groups depending on privatel…

The relationship between fear of crime and risk perception across Europe

The relationship between fear of crime and risk perception across Europe

Cross-national comparisons of fear of crime have been gaining in popularity within the academic community, as they allow for the examination of both individual and country-level correlates of this phenomenon. Nevertheless, the role of perceived victimization risk in fostering fear of crime with respect to various country specifics is often neglected. Drawing on data from the European Social Survey Round 5 (ESS R5), the aim of this study is to explore the relationship between fear of crime and risk perception i…

The impact of parenting style on fear of crime among adolescent girls and boys

The impact of parenting style on fear of crime among adolescent girls and boys

Research on adolescent fear of crime is still relatively limited and often simply applies theoretical explanations proposed for adults. This study strives to extend current knowledge in this field by analyzing the impact of parenting style on fear of crime, namely parental attachment, parental supervision, and parental support of adolescent autonomy, while also considering possible gender differences. Using data from a self-report survey of approximately 1500 Czech adolescents, a hierarchical regression analys…

Significant others and the importance of ancestry for Czech national identity

Significant others and the importance of ancestry for Czech national identity

Nations are viewed as metaphorical families having common ancestors. Czechs, for example, share the legend about a forefather Čech who brought his people into Czechia. Analysing the Czech ISSP 2013 data we examine how the importance of having Czech descent depends on Christian denomination, openness towards immigration, perceived commonality with ‘significant Others’, foreign-born parents, and socio-demographics. Results of the analysis suggest that Czech ancestry is less important part of national identi…

Jací jsme rovnostáři? Výdělky, příjmy a situace domácností v Česku v porovnání s Evropou

K tomu využívá široké palety statistických a sociologických dat, zčásti pocházejících z evropsk…
