Validity of the construct of Right-Wing Authoritarianism and its measure in post-socialistic region: A case of the Czech Republic

This article presents an analysis of the construct validity of the Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) scale measured on a nationally representative sample of respondents in the Czech Republic. The authors – adhering to a paradigm of internationally comparative research – test whether the RWA scale, which was originally developed in the North American cultural milieu, can serve as a valid measurement instrument in a significantly different cultural environment. The test consists of an examination of the scal…

Precarious work and care responsibilities in the economic crisis

Economic transformation after 1989 and the global economic recession that began in 2008 have caused an increase in precarious work in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. As a result of refamilialization, precarious work acquired a specific form for women. We use the Czech Republic as an example in analysing a trend that is obvious throughout the Visegrád countries and apply the capabilities approach to understand the dynamics of precarious work in the lives of women with care responsibilities. Neithe…

The Discursive Dimension of Second-order Elections: The Case of Czech Regional Elections 2012

The Discursive Dimension of Second-order Elections: The Case of Czech Regional Elections 2012

The goal of this paper is to describe linguistic and issue differences in election manifestos of the parties involved in the Czech 2012 regional election and contribute to a better understanding of second-order election (SOE) theory on a discursive level. The year 2012 brought two main changes: a significant success of the Communist Party and a rise of regional parties, movements and coalitions. Thus, the paper looks at differences between strong well-established parties and the newly successful Communist part…

Impact of Primary and Secondary Social Origin Factors on the Transition to University in the Czech Republic

The main objective of this paper is to show to what extent and why students with the same academic aptitude but different social backgrounds have different odds of entering university. For our analysis, we separated primary and secondary factors of social origin in the formation of educational inequalities (Boudon 1974). The results show that the primary and secondary factors have approximately the same influence on the transition to university. The Czech schools do not affect the process of forming educationa…

From Quantitative to Qualitative Differences: Testing MMI and EMI in the Czech Secondary School System in the First Decade of the 21st Century

This article examines secondary education in the Czech Republic between 2000 and 2010. We analyzed the consequences of educational expansion on odds to achieve secondary education with a school-leaving certificate (SLC) by social origin. We utilize the theories of maximally maintained inequality – MMI (Raftery & Hout, 1993) and effectively maintained inequality – EMI (Lucas, 2001). We analyzed data from PISA 2000 to 2009 for the Czech Republic. We support EMI theory against MMI. Quantitative (vertical) dif…

Zahrnuje tedy více než šedesát let, během kterých obyvatelé Hlučínska uzavírali sňatky, vychovávali děti, stavěli domy, chodili do kostela, modlili se, pracovali, utvářeli svou regionální identitu, tedy žili své dny všední i sváteční.

Cílem této studie je podrobně představit problematiku ekvivalence postojových škál a poskytnout přehled o dostupných kvantitativních technikách, kterými lze ekvivalenci testovat.…

Srovnatelnost Schwartzovy hodnotové škály v mezinárodních datech

Srovnatelnost Schwartzovy hodnotové škály v mezinárodních datech

The first part of this article looks at the comparability of the cross-country PVQ scale tested on the basis of the Sixth Round of the European Social Survey. To test comparability, the classic 21-item tool is used to measure ten different types of value orientation. These value types are based on Schwartz’s original basic human values theory. In order to test equivalence, a multiple group confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA) was used. The results of the analyses show that the configural and metric equivalen…

Pre-listening Stage and Teaching Listening from the Adult Learner’s Perspective

Since  the  beginning  of  Communicative  Language  Teaching  we  have  taken  for  granted  that teaching listening comprehension should be an integral part of every general English course and that a listening session in the classroom should consist of three stages:  1. pre-listening, 2. whilelistening and 3. post-listening. However, how often do we teach listening specifically? Do we know what  exactly  happens  in  each&nbs…
