Pathways to professionalism? Quality improvement, care pathways, and the interplay of standardization and clinical autonomy

Care pathways are a prominent feature of efforts to improve healthcare quality, outcomes and accountability, but sociological studies of pathways often find professional resistance to standardisation. This qualitative study examined the adoption and adaptation of a novel pathway as part of a randomised controlled trial in an unusually complex, non‐linear field – emergency general surgery – by teams of surgeons and physicians in six theoretically sampled sites in the UK. We find near‐universal receptivi…

Gender, In(equity), and the Scientific Workforce

Gender, In(equity), and the Scientific Workforce

Gender hierarchies in the scientific workforce reflect and reinforce relations of status and power in societies. Concentrating on the United States and European Union, this chapter reveals deep and persistent gender disparities in participation by scientific field, and in performance, recognition, and rewards in scientific careers.  Explanations of these disparities lie within intersecting institutional influences including family/households, and in the culture, practices, and organizational structures of sci…

Meziválečné sociologické výzkumy pražské chudiny

The article describes and analyses the first two sociological studies on the poor in Prague, which took place in the 1920s and 1930s. Political Knowledge in the Czech Republic

Political Knowledge in the Czech Republic

About this bookThis book examines the origins, nature, and impact of different facets of political knowledge in the Czech Republic between 1967 and 2014. The central argument presented in this book is that evaluating citizens on the basis of objective, or factual, knowledge alone makes little sense. What citizens know about politics comes from a variety of sources that are complementary. This is the first detailed study of how much Czechs know about politics, and why it matters. Here are some of the key fin…

Kruh sociologické racionality: pozice sociologa v hermeneutické perspektivě

Cílem článku je aplikovat pojem hermeneutického kruhu na pozici sociologa. Ačkoli existuje několik významných teoretiků, kteří ideu hermeneutiky přenesli do sociologie, žádný z nich se detailně nezabýval tématem hermeneutického kruhu. V článku je analýza hermeneutického …

Proč ženy pečují? Gender a neformální péče o seniory

Based on qualitative research of women that cared in the past or care now for their frail elderly mothers, this article aims to describe and explain some of the factors leading to the predominance of women in informal care for the elderly. Vnitřní periferie v Česku: Multidimenzionalita sociálního vyloučení ve venkovských oblastech.

Vnitřní periferie v Česku: Multidimenzionalita sociálního vyloučení ve venkovských oblastech.

The spatial concentration of social disadvantage in rural areas not only poses a risk to social cohesion but also represents a challenge for public policy. This article draws on a multidimensional concept of disadvantage to study spatial aspects of disadvantage in Czech rural areas. Current studies aimed at identifying ‘inner peripheries’ as areas with an increased risk of social exclusion fail to distinguish between different forms of disadvantage. Their methodological approach blends regions struggling w…
