Precarious work and care responsibilities in the economic crisis

Economic transformation after 1989 and the global economic recession that began in 2008 have caused an increase in precarious work in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. As a result of refamilialization, precarious work acquired a specific form for women. We use the Czech Republic as an example in analysing a trend that is obvious throughout the Visegrád countries and apply the capabilities approach to understand the dynamics of precarious work in the lives of women with care responsibilities. Neithe…

The role of basic values and education on women’s work and family preferences in Europe

The role of basic values and education on women’s work and family preferences in Europe

Purpose – Consistent with dual-process models of behaviour, Miles (2015) has shown that Schwartz’ basic values can provide a valuable framework for empirically analysing the role of values and cultural contexts in driving human behaviour. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to this line of research by distinguishing individual values from macro-level values, as well as from other micro- and macro-conditions, in order to test whether individual values shape women’s work-family orientations in ways …

Krása jako kapitál: Role atraktivity v úspěchu na trhu práce

The main objective of the paper is threefold: first, to examine the role of physical attractiveness in the labour market in the broader context of economic and sociological theory second, to assess gender differences in returns to beauty and third, to show that the empirical evidence on gender differences in returns to beauty that has to date prevailingly come from North America cannot be applied to Europe without further examination. We use data from the first large-scale sociological survey focusing on physi…

The Social-Psychological Context of Human Values: The Reciprocal Relationship between Personality Traits and Value Orientations

The Social-Psychological Context of Human Values: The Reciprocal Relationship between Personality Traits and Value Orientations

This article investigates and tests the relationship between values (PVQ scale) and personality traits (NEO-FFI) using non-recursive structural modelling while controlling for other potentially significant variables (e.g. age, gender, attractiveness, cognitive skills), an approach that is proposed as an alternative to correlation and regression analyses, which are more common in this type of psychological research. Structural modelling, based on representative data from the Czech follow-up to the PIAAC interna…

The article is devoted to the problem of war as surveyed in the Czech sociology and to the significance of the experience of the war for the Czech science. Before the WWII, the topic in question was on the margin of main interests of Czech scholars, and the situation did not even improve after the war. Mezi taktikou a afektem, ne-místem a místem: Vizuální analýza každodenní geografie osob bez domova

Mezi taktikou a afektem, ne-místem a místem: Vizuální analýza každodenní geografie osob bez domova

The article uses photovoice to explore the everyday geography of homelessness and its affective dimension. We focus on two aspects of the everyday geography captured by photovoice: (1) movement in space and (2) the performativity of heterotopic places. The aim is to understand how the research partners as actors (re)present and (re)construct their everyday geography by visual means and how they relate to it affectively (or otherwise). Photovoice is a suitable method for this type of research as it has been use…

On the macro level it examines the role of the business cycle and its effect on part-time employment in the two groups of countries since 2001. Multi-scalar geographies of polarisation and peripheralisation: A case study of Czechia

Multi-scalar geographies of polarisation and peripheralisation: A case study of Czechia

A key issue in socio-economic geography is to understand how regional and social polarisation shapes the territorial organisation of society. We argue that effects of polarisation are not translated simply and straightforwardly in a whole region, but vary to a large extent with respect to different types of accessibility areas. We applied the time-accessibility framework to classify a territory into urban, peri-urban, rural, and remote rural areas at a national and regional scale. Subsequently, we computed com…
