Setkání otevře od 15 hod. přednáška Producing “edible” insects: imagining care and welfare in future food systems (Christopher Bear, Cardiff University).

Od 16 do 18 hod. poté proběhne řízená ochutnávka pokrmů na bázi hmyzu, jejíž součástí bude společná reflexe nejen našich pocitů a senzorických dojmů, ale i bioetických, environmentálních, kulturních a nutričních aspektů jedení hmyzu. Konzumace hmyzu není povinnou součástí ochutnávky, mluvit můžeme i o tom, proč hmyzí pokrmy nejíme.

Z akce budeme pořizovat audiovizuální záznam za účelem následné sociologické analýzy. Záznam nebude zveřejněn a jakékoli publikační výstupy budou důsledně anonymizovány.

Přednáška (s diskuzí) se bude konat v angličtině. Řízená ochutnávka proběhne česky.

Producing “edible” insects: imagining care and welfare in future food systems

Interest in the edibility of insects, already embedded in the culinary traditions of large parts of the world, has grown significantly in Western countries over the past decade. Driven by connected concerns around the contribution of livestock farming to climate change, the impact of meat consumption on human health, and around farm animal welfare, insects have been promoted as a nutritious and sustainable alternative protein. However, questions remain about their acceptability to consumers, with many studies suggesting they will be put off by a so-called ‘yuck factor’. This talk will investigate the edibility of insects from a different perspective, considering how the way they are farmed and looked after could affect their future uptake. To do this, it will discuss recent research that has explored the practices and ideas of UK insect farmers, and the ideas of young children (age 7-11) about the role they see for insects in their visions for future food systems. In both cases, insects are shown to be awkward creatures, inhabiting morally ambiguous territory within food provisioning. Reporting on this research, the talk questions what it means to 'care' for insects, and considers the implications of this for their future significance as an alternative to other sources of protein.
