Life Satisfaction and Subjective/Objective Socioeconomic Status in European Countries: Does Affluence Matter?

This paper addresses the links between life satisfaction, objective socioeconomic status (SES) (education, occupation, and income), and subjective status (self-perceived standing in a society’s social hierarchy). In particular, it explores cross-national variation according to countries’ wealth. Using 2012 European Social Survey (ESS) data from 28 countries, the study shows that the link between socioeconomic status and well-being is stronger in poorer countries. In the most affluent countries, by contrast…

Population-representative study reveals cardiovascular and metabolic disease biomarkers associated with misaligned sleep schedules

Population-representative study reveals cardiovascular and metabolic disease biomarkers associated with misaligned sleep schedules

Social jetlag manifests as a difference in sleep timing on workdays and free days. Social jetlag is often associated with shorter, lower-quality sleep, so it is unclear how much the chronic circadian misalignment contributes to observed negative health outcomes. We aimed to (1) investigate associations between social jetlag, chronotype (one of its determinants), and the levels of health markers, (2) describe factors associated with social jetlag, and (3) examine whether working from home can reduce social jetl…

The importance of christianity, customs, and traditions in the national identities of European countries

Christianity has lost its salience, but customs and traditions maintained their importance in forming national identity in Europe. Using the ISSP National Identity 2003 and 2013 data from 17 European countries, this article tests how the salience of Christianity and sharing of national customs and traditions varies according to the share of Muslim and immigrant population, and whether the association changed across time. Multilevel regressions show that the link between the size of the Muslim population and th…

Social Jetlag in the Context of Work and Family

Social Jetlag in the Context of Work and Family. By definition, social jetlag – a misalignment between the social and biological time – is closely linked to social obligations that conflict with the individual’s chronotype. It is a widespread phenomenon and is linked to various negative health, cognitive, and psychological outcomes. Although there are studies on social jetlag, they are mostly dominated by biomedical approaches. Therefore, the presented study aims to explore the link between social jetlag…

Gender differences in the link between family scholarly culture and parental educational aspirations

Gender differences in the link between family scholarly culture and parental educational aspirations

This study investigated family scholarly culture’s effects on parental educational aspirations, with special attention paid to gender differences based on the ideas of stratified parenting and a sociocultural approach to parenting. Two-level structural modeling was applied to nationally representative Czech Household Panel Survey data from 2015 – 2016. Overall, our analysis did not find an independent effect from scholarly culture on parental educational aspirations after controlling for several socioecono…

The chapter starts with a brief description of the church-state relationship in the Czech lands / Czech Republic in the last century. As a consequence of the massive turning away from the churches, the country is one of the most secular regions around the world. More Money, Less Housework? Relative Resources and Housework in the Czech Republic

More Money, Less Housework? Relative Resources and Housework in the Czech Republic

The paper explores the association between housework, earnings, and education. In contrast to the majority of existing studies from Western countries, this paper tests the bargaining theory in the Czech Republic. Given the high female labor force participation coupled with a tendency for women to drop out of the labor market for several years after childbirth, the country provides an interesting context to test the theory. Using data from the first wave of the Czech Household Panel, we apply multilevel mixed-e…

Marital Status, Smoking and Binge Drinking in Comparative Perspective

The paper explores cross-national differences in the link between marital status, smoking and binge drinking. Using the International Social Survey Data (ISSP Health and Health Care) from 2011, it tests whether the gap between married and single individuals depends on the prevalence of the vice in the society. This hypothesis was partly corroborated for binge drinking in both male and female samples though the link between marriage and alcohol consumption is reversed in the high prevalence context. In case of …

Globální svět čelí vážným společenským problémům, jejichž dopady můžeme vidět i v Evropě.

The paper explores the link between employment and subjective well-being among mothers with small children. Using a pooled sample of the ESS 2004–2014 data from 30 European countries. Analyzing multiple measures of subjective well-being, the paper shows that homemakers are happier than full-time workers. There were no significant differences between homemakers and part-time workers. The variation across countries was not linked to the provision of formal childcare, of parental leave, or tax system.…
