Sources of sex-disaggregated data

The collection and analysis of information and data on an area or issue should always be categorized by gender. This is because it allows important inequalities and gender differences to be identified. This document presents several examples of data sources (CSO, MIT, EIGE, Eurostat and OECD) that can be used to map the position of women and men (not only) in the field of entrepreneurship and to identify relevant types of support for women entrepreneurs. For each example data source, the characteristics of the…

Strong Gender Contract, Weak Institutions: Gender Pay Gap in Slovenia and Czechia

Strong Gender Contract, Weak Institutions: Gender Pay Gap in Slovenia and Czechia

This article investigates the dynamics of the gender pay gap (GPG) in two post-socialist economies, Czechia and Slovenia, during their capitalist transition and EU membership. Using regression analysis on large samples of linked employer–employee data to estimate the total GPG and within-job GPG and institutional analysis, we find that in both countries women earn significantly less than men for the same work. We interpret this as due to institutions, policies, and practices, including gender inequalities in…

Organizační charakteristiky, transparentnost v odměňování a GPG.

Organizační charakteristiky, transparentnost v odměňování a GPG.

Czech Parents Under Lockdown: Different Positions, Different Temporalities

Czech Parents Under Lockdown: Different Positions, Different Temporalities

Using an intersectional approach, we explore how parents in the Czech Republic coped with the increased demands of childcare and how their perceptions of childcare changed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on Nancy Fraser’s theory of the social contradiction of capitalism, we address the question of whether the pandemic situation can be viewed as an opportunity to increase recognition of care. Qualitative interviews with parents from various socioeconomic backgrounds conducted from spring 2020 to su…

New Technologies, Older Workers in Banking and Nursing

New Technologies, Older Workers in Banking and Nursing

The article examines how technological change and organisational restructuring interacts with population ageing and policies that extend working life, and how older workers understand these trends. Using organisational and contextual approaches and qualitative research on nurses and bankers in Czechia, we investigate older workers' experiences with digitalisation. The age disadvantage older workers experience in digitalising workplaces is produced by three processes: responsibilisation, production of insecurit…

The Great Separation: Top Earner Segregation at Work in High-Income Countries

The Great Separation: Top Earner Segregation at Work in High-Income Countries

Earnings segregation at work is an understudied topic in social science, despite the workplace being an everyday nexus for social mixing, cohesion, contact, claims making, and resource exchange. It is all the more urgent to study as workplaces, in the last decades, have undergone profound reorganizations that could affect the magnitude and evolution of earnings segregation. Analyzing linked employer-employee panel administrative databases, the authors estimate the evolving isolation of higher earners from othe…

Pivoting and positionality: entrepreneurship, care, and the Covid-19 pandemic in Czechia and the U.S.A.

Pivoting and positionality: entrepreneurship, care, and the Covid-19 pandemic in Czechia and the U.S.A.

Our research reveals how family and business pivot opportunities and decisions are intertwined and shaped by respondent social positionality in two country contexts—the USA and Czechia. Our findings underline the need for intersectional, contextual, and comparative analyses as they relate to positionality and entrepreneurship generally as well as to specific women SEBOs’ Covid-19 survival strategies. We offer policy insights for supporting women as diverse SEBOs, with a specific focus on crises influencing…

Gendered impact of caregiving on older nonmedical healthcare workers

Background: The paper deals with older workers and the issue of combining informal care for family members with paid employment, which is increasingly important in the light of socio-demographic changes in society - namely demographic ageing and the lengthening of working life. The topic is highly relevant to the group of non-medical healthcare professions studied, as they combine care in the professional and domestic spheres. Purpose of the research: The aim of the research is to point to gender inequalities…

Within-job gender pay inequality in 15 countries

Within-job gender pay inequality in 15 countries

Extant research on the gender pay gap suggests that men and women who do the same work for the same employer receive similar pay, so that processes sorting people into jobs are thought to account for the vast majority of the pay gap. Data that can identify women and men who do the same work for the same employer are rare, and research informing this crucial aspect of gender differences in pay is several decades old and from a limited number of countries. Here, using recent linked employer–employee data from …

Genderové rozdíly v odměňování a rodičovství: možnosti inovace ISPV

Genderové rozdíly v odměňování a rodičovství: možnosti inovace ISPV

The purpose of this document is to provide inputs and contribute to reflection for decision-making in the field of equality in employment between men and women. It aims to be a document of proposals and measures of public policies that can be taken into consideration, both in the 27 countries of the European Union (EU27) and in their relationship with their partners in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), to increase women's participation into the labour market in a stable and equitable manner.…

Rodičovství a genderové mzdové rozdíly ve vybraných kontextech trhu práce před pandemií covidu-19 a na jejím začátku

The article addresses the influence of parenthood on the gender pay gap (GPG). The linked employer − employee data available that is suitable for a detailed GPG analysis, does not include parenthood in Czechia. It is thus possible to examine the relationship between the GPG and parenthood via this data only indirectly through the use of data on age. Information System on Average Earnings (ISPV) data allows for the monitoring of compliance with the legal standard that requires equal pay for equal work. The an…

Ups and downs in finance, ups without downs in inequality

The upswing in finance in recent decades has led to rising inequality, but do downswings in finance lead to a symmetric decline in inequality? We analyze the asymmetry of the effect of ups and downs in finance, and the effect of increased capital requirements and the bonus cap on national earnings inequality. We use administrative employer–employee-linked data from 1990 to 2019 for 12 countries and data from bank reports, from 2009 to 2017 in 13 European countries. We find a strong asymmetry in the effect of…

Podnikatelky?

Podnikatelky?

Rozdíl v odměňování žen a mužů a rodičovství. [The gender pay gap and parenthood.]

ČR vykazuje dlouhodobě jeden z nejvyšších rozdílů v průměrných mzdách mužů a žen (GPG) v rámci EU. Za příčinu vy-sokého GPG bývá v ČR často považována rozdílná úroveň vzdělání anebo segregace do kategorií zaměstnání. Segrega-ce do kategorií zaměstnání nicméně vysvětluje pouze asi čtvrtinu celkového rozdílu mezd a ženy dosahují vyššího vzdě-lání než muži.
