Gender a rovnováha moci

In the Czech Republic, women are severely under-represented in decision-making positions. Women make up only 26% of legislators, senior officials and managers, and only 3% of employed women are employed in management positions. These figures have not changed significantly over time. Gender equality infrastructure is almost wholly limited to the central level (Government and Ministries) in the Czech Republic. In the Czech Republic there is currently no legislation or policy aimed at achieving a gender bala…

Frauenerwerbsarbeit, Familienpolitik und Kinderbetreuung. Frühkindliche Betreuung und Bildung in der tschechischen Gesellschaft nach 1945

In this chapter the author has argued that there were four critical junctures that institutionalized a specific path of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in the Czech Republic. Its four critical junctures led to the institutionalization of a specific division of rules and concepts regarding “adequate” ECEC. The already established path of childcare and pre-school education policy places clear limits on the development of new policies.…

The Revenge of History – The Institutional Roots of Post-Communist Family Policy in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland

The authors combine historical and sociological institutional analysis to show that despite thepolitical and socio-economic transformation in 1990s, the institutional development during andbefore the communist era provides the best explanation for current childcare policies in CentralEurope. While most authors have concentrated on policy changes that have taken place in the regionsince 1989, this article concentrates on the historical roots of these policies and shows that today’spolicies are highly influenc…

Genderové inovace v malém podnikání. Strategie kombinace práce a rodiny v podnikatelských párech

Using the so-called embeddedness perspective, this article highlights the importance of context (time, space and institutions) for the direction of current research on the gender structure of entrepreneurship. The authors focus mainly on the effects of institutional context, namely tax and family policies, on business couples (copreneurs). The emphasis is on how these factors and formal institutions, which are reflected in informal gender norms, influence the work-life balance strategies of copreneurs. Based o…

Kvantitativní a kvalitativní přístupy ve výzkumu životních drah

Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches in Life Course ResearchAbstract: Despite the growing number of statistical analyses of life-history data and a long tradition of biographical research, there is often no communication between these two streams of life-course research. It is possible to examine the life course quantitatively through life histories, which may be used to model synthetic biographies in order to reveal patterns in the timing and sequencing of life events, the durations of states between them,…

I would take any job, but…: Biographies of low-educated women at the intersection of class and gender

I would take any job, but…: Biographies of low-educated women at the intersection of class and gender

The paper analyses the biographies of women at the intersection of class and gender in the Czech Republic. With the transition towards a market-based economy and a decrease in the symbolic capital of workers in the blue-collar and service fields, and in the context of a familialist social policy and a labour market that discourages a combination of paid employment and care responsibilities, women with low education find themselves in the secondary labour market and exposed to gender discrimination. We illustra…

“Intersection of Gender and Class in Socio-historical and Biographical Perspectives"

This paper investigates how structural changes in Czech society brought about by the transition from the centrally planned state-socialist regime towards market-based capitalism, which impacts individual opportunities and choices. The intersectional approach and concept of social capital allows us to interpret employment trajectories of women in the Czech Republic in its historical as well as biographical contexts. This paper addresses the underdevelopment of intersectional analysis of the dynamically changing…

"Family Policies in ‘Hybrid’ Welfare States after the Crisis: Pathways Between Policy Expansion and Retrenchment”

"Family Policies in ‘Hybrid’ Welfare States after the Crisis: Pathways Between Policy Expansion and Retrenchment”

The economic crisis has significantly challenged national welfare states and has often led to retrenchment. The question arises how countries have reacted to the crisis in the area of family policy – not directly connected to rising unemployment and also not as demanding for state spending as for example the pension system. This article analyzes family policy reforms during the crisis in three small European welfare states – Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovenia. Focusing on the ‘rationale’ behind t…

Vlastní cestou? Životní dráhy v pozdně moderní společnosti

Vlastní cestou? Životní dráhy v pozdně moderní společnosti

The book is innovative in applying both, quantitative and qualitative life-course research methodology. The authors analyse the transformation of partner and family arrangements and identify problems connected with achieving a work-life balance in Czech society. The book explains how the processes of individualisation, gender-conventional refamilialisation, and globalisation (including the socially stratified effects of the economic crisis) contribute to the increasing social stratification of life courses.…

Politika a každodennost na českých vysokých školách: Etnografické pohledy na vzdělávání a výzkum [Politics and everyday life in Czech universities: Ethnographic perspectives on teaching, learning and research]

This publication is the result of a three-year, team-based, ethnographic study of academic and student life in Czech higher education. Five case studies were chosen to reflect a diversity of situations, including elite and peripheral positions, metropolitan and regional locations, public and private legal status, humanities, applied social science, technical and natural science subjects, professional and academic curricula and basic and applied research. Genderové souvislosti reforem důchodového systému v ČR

The paper discusses changes that have occurred in the Czech pension system since 1996 in terms of their gender impact. The pension system is considered in a broader socio-economic context. I take into account different working careers of men and women and their unequal share in unpaid care work. I analyse individual steps of the reform (the criteria for entitlement to a retirement pension, changes in the mechanism for calculating pension benefits, and the newly established private second pillar) and show the i…

Regulation of Abortion as State-Socialist Governmentality: The Case of Czechoslovakia

In the countries of the former Eastern bloc (and the USSR), abortion politics followed a different historical path than in Western Europe. In Czechoslovakia, abortion was made legal relatively early on, almost as soon as the social and political turmoil that followed World War II and the communist coup in 1948 had settled. Unlike in Western Europe, however, it was not legalized in response to pressure from civil society or the feminist movement. It was a bureaucratic decision made in relation to specific macro…

The framing of abortion in the Czech Republic: the continuity of discourse and development of institutions

Abortion was first legalised in Czechoslovakia at a relatively early date – in 1957. However, unlike in Western Europe, this did not occur as a result of pressure from civil society and the feminist movement. While attempting to explain the continuity and change of abortion institutions in the former Czechoslovakia /Czech Republic, the article focuses on the framing of the debates that preceded the changes in abortion legislation in the Czech Republic since the 1950s. Discourse analysis of media and expert a…
