Exploring biomedicalization through complementary and alternative medicine in a postsocialist context

Drawing on fieldwork in the postsocialist Czech Republic, we explore the transformative processes of biomedicalization, both within and in relation to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). We argue that it would be simplistic to understand evidence of these processes in CAM as a sign that CAM has fallen prey to biomedicine. Legitimacy and Civic Culture: Trust in Democracy in the Czech Republic after EU Accession (2004-2014).

This paper investigates the role of civic culture and other political factors in support for democracy in the Czech Republic during the decade following EU accession. The goal is to assess the validity of civic virtue theory and to compare the impact of these factors on affective legitimacy using the ISSP Citizenship modules 2004 and 2014. Cílem příspěvku je představit návrh na zveřejnění dat o kriminalitě na úrovni ulic v podmínkách českých měst. Příspěvek nejprve informuje čtenáře o aktuálních výzkumech ve světě, které se věnují analýzám kriminality na úrovni ulic. Ze zahraničních výzkumů víme, že pokud analyzujeme kriminalitu na mikro-úrovni uličních segmentů, tak je polovina trestné činnosti koncentrována na pouhých pěti procentech segmentů. The legacy of equality and the weakness of law: Within-Job Gender Wage Inequality in the Czech Republic

Using firm-level data from the Czech Republic in the years 1998, 2002, and 2004, we examine whether the introduction of legislative measures for gender equality connected with the accession to the European Union had a significant effect on gender wage inequality. The central conclusion of our analysis is that within-job wage inequality plays a significant role in the Czech labour market, and that there were no substantive changes during the period studied.
