Interpretative Cooperation with Biographical Texts: A Semiotic Approach to Analyzing Collective Memory

This article reports on research into the little-known process of how documents of memory, in this case biographical narratives of life under the communist regime, are received by members of the community of memory. The research is based on an experiment in which three generations of family members (two generations of eyewitnesses of communism and one postcommunist generation) were asked to infer the political identity of narrators from very short fragments of biographical texts concerning the communist era. U…

Every researcher has to deal withnumerous ethical questions during the wholeresearch process. Ethical dilemmas are partiallybased on the theoretical perspective of theresearcher. My perspective in gender and entrepreneurshipresearch was a feminist approach, which is primarily based on rejecting the valuefreenature of research, and accepting a politicalcommitment to create knowledge which could improvethe position of women in society. This articlepresents research which started in autumn 2012.I planned to do a c…

Metodologické aspekty měření postojů české veřejnosti k trestání pachatelů trestných činů

Metodologické aspekty měření postojů české veřejnosti k trestání pachatelů trestných činů

The trend towards harsher punishment of offenders, usually termed the ‘new punitiveness’, is often explained as a response to deepening social and economic uncertainty. One important area that criminal policy research has long dealt with is public attitudes to punishment. Statements that the public want more severe punishments for those who break the law are often used to justify introducing measures to make the criminal justice system harsher. There are, however, different ways to measure public opinion o…

European Strategy for regional responses to demographic changes

European Strategy for regional responses to demographic changes

Demographic change is one of the most important challenges for economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development in many regions of Central Europe. Population losses due to low fertility rates, migration and population ageing have already been experienced in many parts of regions, cities as well as some metropolitan areas. It is crucial to realize that population shrinkage and ageing is and will be important both for urban and rural areas in Central Europe. All forecasts state that these p…

Epistemologie a dělení kvantitativní a kvalitativní sociologie

Článek shrnuje vývoj moderní epistemologie humanitních a sociálních věd a vztahuje jej k sociologii.

The main goal of the book is to study spatial patterns of voting behaviour in parliamentary elections in Czechia between 1920 and 2006. The book seeks to analyse voting behaviour through studying political preferences expressed by the elections of political parties in the general elections. The four types of questions have been asked: 1. How large are regional differences in electoral results on the territory of Czechia? How the voting patterns look like? 2. Do voting patterns tend to be stable over time or th…

Etnografie: Improvizace v teorii a terénní praxi [Ethnography: Improvisation in theory and fieldwork practice]

Nesourodost a mnohoznačnost skutečnosti, její neurčitosti, paradoxy a protiklady tvoří nedílnou součást pole zkoumání a žádají si tvůrčí přístupy k psaní a žánrový…

Demographic Avant-Garde: Jews in Bohemia between the Enlightenment and the Shoah

Demographic Avant-Garde: Jews in Bohemia between the Enlightenment and the Shoah

This book studies the unique demographic behavior of Jews in Bohemia, starting from a moment in history when industrialization in Central Europe was far away in the future and when Jews were still living legally restricted lives in ghettos. Under conditions not stipulated by conventional demographic theories, Bohemian Jews started recording marked decreases in mortality and fertility that signaled an early onset of their demographic transition.Demographic Avant-Garde examines what made Jews in Bohemia true for…

Fertility, natural growth and migration in the Czech Republic: an urban-suburban-rural gradient analysis of long-term trends and recent reversals

This paper examines long-term trends in fertility and recent reversals in natural increase, net migration, and general fertility across residential contexts in the post-communist Czech Republic. Long-term differentials are analysed on the cumulative fertility of cohorts whose fertility was completed before and after the change in political regime in 1989. The results show important effects education and residential context (urban–suburban–rural gradient) have on the cohorts with (almost) completed fertilit…
