Gender a změny v dělbě práce v domácnostech s dětmi v době pandemie covidu-19

Gender a změny v dělbě práce v domácnostech s dětmi v době pandemie covidu-19

The article ties in with the scholarship on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on gender equality. Based on a qualitative analysis of interviews with parents of children under 12, we examine the processes that led to the increase or dismantling of the gender division of labour in families during the first nationwide lockdown. Using the concepts of path dependency and ‘doing’ and ‘undoing’ gender, we explain the strategies couples with children used to adapt to the enormous increase in reproductive wor…

The space behind the garden: Inconspicuous land-related care in Czechia

The space behind the garden: Inconspicuous land-related care in Czechia

The article deals with the phenomenon of taking up responsibility and individual care for public land, presenting the stories of two Czech people who have engaged in their environments in such a way.  Should we see these actions as moral interventions, transporting ideas of good care, decrying neglect and ill-practice by offering practical examples of more appropriate ways of handling things? Can we understand them as not only forms of everyday world-making (Postero/Elinoff 2019), but also as inconspicuous,…

Sustainable agrifood systems for a post-growth world.

Sustainable agrifood systems are critical to averting climate-driven social and ecological disasters, overcoming the growth paradigm and redefining the interactions of humanity and nature in the twenty-first century. This Perspective describes an agenda and examples for comprehensive agrifood system redesign according to principles of sufficiency, regeneration, distribution, commons and care. This redesign should be supported by coordinated education and research efforts that do not simply replicate dominant d…

Quiet sustainability: Fertile lessons from Europe

Quiet sustainability: Fertile lessons from Europe's productive gardeners.

This paper investigates notable examples of sustainable lifestyles in relation to food systems. It explores the surprisingly neglected case of widely practiced and environmentally sustainable food self-provisioning in post-socialist Central and Eastern Europe. Our argument is rooted in qualitative and quantitative data gathered over a seven-year period (2005–2011). The research considers the extent of and motivations for these practices in Poland and Czechia.…

Sustainability and the "urban peasant": rethinking the cultural politics of food self-provisioning in the Czech Republic.

Sustainability and the "urban peasant": rethinking the cultural politics of food self-provisioning in the Czech Republic.

This chapter introduces different explanations for high rates of growing and sharing food outside the market system in the Czech Republic based in social anthropological research. The authors have extended that work with their own qualitative and quantitative research over a period of six years in the Czech Republic, and here present findings that confirm the contribution that food self-provisioning is making to both the social and ecological sustainability.…

From coping strategy to hopeful everyday practice: Changing interpretations of food self-provisioning.

From coping strategy to hopeful everyday practice: Changing interpretations of food self-provisioning.

While alternative food networks (AFNs) have become the leading conceptualisation of sustainable food systems, vibrant scholarship on food self-provisioning (FSP) in Central and Eastern Europe has remained confined to the geopolitical region it investigates. This article brings these two bodies of thought closer together in two steps. First, we trace four framings of FSP deployed over the last three decades—coping strategy, cultural practice, hobby and source of good food and reading FSP as transformative pra…

Kde je v Česku periferní venkov?

Kde je v Česku periferní venkov?

The basic aim of the chapter is delimitation of peripheral areas representing rural regions characterized by worsened living conditions or increased levels of various forms of social disadvantage. For this purpose, we use existing statistical data collected by the Czech Statistical Office or various state administration bodies available for small territorial units. The approach to defining peripheral regions is based on the assumption that the concept of disadvantage is multidimensional. There are several diff…

„Vlastně dělám toho taxikáře, musím ty děti rozvážet“: Rodiny, péče o děti a problém skloubení péče a zaměstnání v periferiích.

The chapter focuses on the obstacles that parents taking care of children have to cope with in rural peripheries. It shows that the complicated traffic situation, the underdeveloped offer of childcare, as well as the smaller variety of schools and leisure activities, as well as the smaller choice of employment reduce choices and complicate the reconciliation of care and work.…

In the chapter the spatial differentiation of residential satisfaction with different aspects of life is presented. An analysis based on data from a 2016 survey on peripheral areas shows that satisfaction of people living in rural peripheries is actually lower than in cities, but also lower than in other rural places. People are less satisfied with the local infrastructure and feel less safe. They also rate relationships between people in locality as worse.…

Retirees are also stratified: pre-retirement socio-occupational status and the well-being of older adults in Central Europe

Most stratification research concerns solely the economically active population and omits inactive seniors. Retirees are often treated as a separate and rather homogeneous social category. However, this approach is only partially valid. Retirees can still be differentiated in regard to their objective and subjective well-being, which is linked to their former occupations. Using large EU-SILC datasets for Central European countries, this article focuses on the effect of pre-retirement socio-occupational categor…

Střední školy v regionech Česka: ovlivňuje periferní poloha nabídku škol, poptávku po nich a úspěšnost jejich studentů?

The chapter examines the geographic factors that influence supply and demand for different types of secondary schools, and the results that secondary school students achieve in state school-leaving examinations. The authors show that Czech regions differ from each other by the structure of supply of secondary school education, but also by the demand for different types of education. However, regional differences in educational outcomes are relatively low when the results of students from the same type of schoo…

European food systems in a regional perspective: A comparative study of the effect of COVID-19 on households and city-region food systems

European food systems in a regional perspective: A comparative study of the effect of COVID-19 on households and city-region food systems

The concept of the city-region food system is gaining attention due to the need to improve food availability, quality and environmental benefits, for example through sustainable agri-food strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of coherent and inclusive food governance, especially regarding food resilience, vulnerability and justice. Given that evidence from good practices is relatively sparse, it is important to better understand the role of different types of cities, regions and house…

Dostupnost veřejnou dopravou: simulace využitelnosti veřejné dopravy v každodenních situacích

The article presents an innovative method of evaluating public transport accessibility. The evaluation is based on a simulation of the usability of public transport in real everyday situations. It measures the amount of time the residents of local communities need when they use public transport to reach various commonly used destinations at a specified time. The method’s main advantage is that it aims at reflecting everyday use of public transport. I demonstrate the use of the method by exploratory accessibi…

Rozdíl v odměňování žen a mužů, efekt rodičovství a prekarity

Gender pay gap, parenthood and work precarity. The paper focuses on how parenthood(measured by the number of children) contributes to the high level of gender pay gap (GPG)in the Czech Republic and how is it shaped by precarious work contracts. The analysis isbased on a questionnaire survey of a representative sample of 1119 respondents aged 20 to55 years. Sequential testing of regression models proved that number of children affectssignificantly the size of a GPG, even after controlling for several factors. T…

Better stories for a gender equal and fairer social recovery from outbreaks: learnings from the RESISTIRÉ project

The pandemic has radically shifted how society is organised, with increased work from home, home-schooling, and intensification of online presence, all with specific (un)intended implications on paid and unpaid care work. These implications, like those of other crises, are gendered and manifest along sex, age, disability, ethnicity/race, migration status, religion, social class, and the intersections between these inequalities. While many studies have identified these unequal and negative impacts, and point to…

Dual responsibilization for housing in a housing crisis: young adults in the Czech Republic

Dual responsibilization for housing in a housing crisis: young adults in the Czech Republic

Young adults in various countries are experiencing deteriorating access to homeownership and affordable rental housing. Whereas many studies have focused on the shift of responsibility for housing from the state to individuals related to a meritocratic ideology, only recently have certain studies identified the ambiguity and incoherence as a significant principle in housing discourses. Responding to these, we analysed 31 narrative interviews and survey data on Czech young adults (aged 18–35), providing uniqu…
