The distribution of foreigners is becoming an essential part of socio-geographical differentiation of Czechia. In addition to international migration, the spatial distribution patterns of non-natives are further modified according to their internal mobility, which, compared to the majority population, is much higher. This article aims to contribute to the debate on the rise of independents in local politics and the underlying factors driving this trend in Europe by investigating the situation in Czechia, a post-communist country with a highly fragmented local government system. This article presents a mixed-methods research protocol suitable for studying everyday mobility and its effects on life chances for a wide range of populations. We argue that it can address, among other issues, two important methodological challenges in the study of mobility: addressing pre-reflexivity and habits, as well as differentiating between voluntary and forced movements. In the chapter the spatial differentiation of residential satisfaction with different aspects of life is presented. An analysis based on data from a 2016 survey on peripheral areas shows that satisfaction of people living in rural peripheries is actually lower than in cities, but also lower than in other rural places.
