Obedient mothers, healthy children: communication on the risks of reproduction in state-socialist Czechoslovakia

Obedient mothers, healthy children: communication on the risks of reproduction in state-socialist Czechoslovakia

The article analyses medical communication in popular media relating to the risks in reproduction in the state-socialist Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1989 and shows how it used emotions as an instrument to control women’s reproductive behaviour. In particular, we use an approach inspired by Donati’s (1992) political discourse analysis and by Snow and Bedford’s (1988) framing analysis to explore communication on the risk of infertility in the abortion debate, the risk of fetal abnormalities in the pren…

What happened to my time during the COVID-19 lockdown? Parents’ subversive temporal regime strategies and their potential beyond the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted individuals to devise new temporal strategies in various spheres of their lives as a result of the spatial regulations imposed during the first lockdown. We apply Lisa Suckert’s theoretical model of ‘the capitalist time regime’ in the analysis of 68 interviews with parents of schoolchildren in seven European countries conducted during the first COVID-19 lockdown in spring 2020. We examine actors’ agency and capability to govern time during the pandemic and the extent to w…

Czech Parents Under Lockdown: Different Positions, Different Temporalities

Czech Parents Under Lockdown: Different Positions, Different Temporalities

Using an intersectional approach, we explore how parents in the Czech Republic coped with the increased demands of childcare and how their perceptions of childcare changed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on Nancy Fraser’s theory of the social contradiction of capitalism, we address the question of whether the pandemic situation can be viewed as an opportunity to increase recognition of care. Qualitative interviews with parents from various socioeconomic backgrounds conducted from spring 2020 to su…

New Technologies, Older Workers in Banking and Nursing

New Technologies, Older Workers in Banking and Nursing

The article examines how technological change and organisational restructuring interacts with population ageing and policies that extend working life, and how older workers understand these trends. Using organisational and contextual approaches and qualitative research on nurses and bankers in Czechia, we investigate older workers' experiences with digitalisation. The age disadvantage older workers experience in digitalising workplaces is produced by three processes: responsibilisation, production of insecurit…

Hands labouring for safety: Mediated intimacy in influencer communities on Instagram

Hands labouring for safety: Mediated intimacy in influencer communities on Instagram

The article explores how digital images of hands are used as a symbolic representation of intimacy and intimate emotions in influencer communication on Instagram. Based on digital ethnography with female influencers in the Czech Republic, the analysis focuses on three categories of communicative practices, where hands function as a visual representation of intimacy—creating community, a sense of vulnerability, and the notion of rawness and openness. The analysis points to the gendered nature of influencer co…

Living hated: Everyday experiences of hate speech across online and offline contexts

The article builds on current research into the effects and harms of hate speech in the lives of its victims. It introduces the anthropological concept of everyday violence to focus on hate speech as an everyday experience as opposed to a sequence of separate hate speech acts. Methodologically, the study is based on a qualitative approach and analyses data collected via semi-structured interviews (N=33) with people who have experienced hate speech in four EU member states (Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic an…

The Great Separation: Top Earner Segregation at Work in High-Income Countries

The Great Separation: Top Earner Segregation at Work in High-Income Countries

Earnings segregation at work is an understudied topic in social science, despite the workplace being an everyday nexus for social mixing, cohesion, contact, claims making, and resource exchange. It is all the more urgent to study as workplaces, in the last decades, have undergone profound reorganizations that could affect the magnitude and evolution of earnings segregation. Analyzing linked employer-employee panel administrative databases, the authors estimate the evolving isolation of higher earners from othe…

Nízkopříjmoví podnikající a jejich způsob vyrovnání se s krizí na příkladu pandemie covidu-19

The aim of this paper is to analyse coping strategies to deal with the impact of crisis (pivots) among low-income entrepreneurs living in a marriage/partnership using the example of a pandemic as a social and economic crisis. We draw on literature that critiques the individualised and masculine conception of entrepreneurship as focused on innovation and profit. Our analysis reveals the diversity of entrepreneurial strategies for coping with pandemics. The choice of strategies has often been interpreted with an…

Within-job gender pay inequality in 15 countries

Within-job gender pay inequality in 15 countries

Extant research on the gender pay gap suggests that men and women who do the same work for the same employer receive similar pay, so that processes sorting people into jobs are thought to account for the vast majority of the pay gap. Data that can identify women and men who do the same work for the same employer are rare, and research informing this crucial aspect of gender differences in pay is several decades old and from a limited number of countries. Here, using recent linked employer–employee data from …

We analyse 30 qualitative interviews with micro-entrepr…

Nurses and the COVID-19 Pandemic – Practices and Identity Construction in Formal and Informal Care

Nurses and the COVID-19 Pandemic – Practices and Identity Construction in Formal and Informal Care

The pandemic highlighted the importance of both formal and informal care and magnified gender inequalities in this area. Women were more represented in care-related frontline professions (including nurses), but they were also more often responsible for providing childcare when institutions (especially schools and nurseries) were closed. This paper builds on criticism aimed at the separate study of formal and informal care and explores the interconnections between the two in the case of Czech nurses with young …

Genderové rozdíly v odměňování a rodičovství: možnosti inovace ISPV

Genderové rozdíly v odměňování a rodičovství: možnosti inovace ISPV
