Comparing Citizen Attitudes towards Security and Liberty in the Czech Republic and Slovakia

It examines Czech and Slovak citizen attitudes toward the use of strong prevention security measures in a situation where the government suspects a terrorist attack or security threats in general. The authors focus on the Czech Republic and Slovakia, two countries that do not have much experience with a severe threat to security, so security is more about pre-emptive measures and general consideration. Dat…

The paper discusses the consequences and limits of these developments, st…

Nesvoboda svobodných nebo past volnosti

The changes in the nature of work and labor market conditions that have taken place in recent decades have, on the one hand, brought greater flexibility and freedom for both employees and employers, but on the other hand, have reduced protections for employees. Union membership has declined, as has the number of employees protected by collective bargaining agreements, and people in a fragmented and precarious labor market find themselves without protection. The urgency of reflecting on these changes became ver…

Beauty and Social Capital

Beauty and Social Capital

The central goal of this chapter is to map the relationship between beauty and social capital, and to answer the question of whether attractive people have more friends and social contacts that give them preferential access to important information or other benefits, or even direct benefits. The chapter begins by reviewing existing psychological and sociological studies that show that people prefer to associate and form bonds with more attractive people, which in turn increases their chances of accumulating st…

Development and Validation of the Ultra-Short Version of the Identity Style Inventory (US-ISI-5) Among Czech Adolescents

Adolescence and the transition to adulthood represent critical periods for identity formation, with a coherent and stable sense of identity being a key component of psychosocial development and functioning in different social roles throughout one’s life. In their decision-making processes, individuals mainly employ three socio-cognitive strategies – informational, normative, and diffuse/avoidant – each of which can be measured by the Identity Style Inventory (ISI). However, …

Involved Fathers and Intensive Parenting in Czechia: Norms and Fathers’ Contextualised Practices

Involved Fathers and Intensive Parenting in Czechia: Norms and Fathers’ Contextualised Practices

Intensive parenting norms that emphasise high parental investment to optimise child development are increasingly prevalent in advanced economies. Although motherhood has been widely studied, fatherhood remains underexplored, especially in contexts like Czechia, where support for shared childcare between parents is limited. Using data from the Czech ISSP 2022 and qualitative interviews with Czech middle‐class fathers and mothers (2022–2024), this study examines how intensive parenting norms shape the views …

Reinforced by the energy crisis: Nuclear revival and public opinion in the Czech Republic

This article compares data from three representative public opinion surveys (2021, 2022, and 2023) to understand the substantial rise in acceptance of nuclear energy in the Czech Republic.

The Microbiopolitics of Novel Foods: The Pro- and Antibiotic Implications of Cultivated Meat and Aquaponic Farming

The Microbiopolitics of Novel Foods: The Pro- and Antibiotic Implications of Cultivated Meat and Aquaponic Farming

As conventional agricultural practices reach their limits, humanity is turning to innovative methods of food production. Using Heather Paxson’s concept of microbiopolitics (2012) as a framework that highlights how microbial life is integrated into social governance, particularly in food production and safety, this article explores the role of microbes in cultivated meat and aquaponic farming. It examines how researchers and producers engage with microbes and considers the potential scenarios of human-microbi…

Sympathy for the strong leader in Europe

Sympathy for the strong leader in Europe

The rule of a strong leader above the law was found acceptable to a certain extent among 52 per cent of ESS Round 10 respondents from 30 European countries. Literature suggests that support for a strong leader is driven by individual and political factors, and individual and societal threats. The effect of individual factors and individual threats on willingness to submit to a strong leader supports the plausibility of the radicalising thesis. Adherence to strong leaders is affected by authoritarian upbringing…

Reassessing poverty measurement in Europe using a cash-flow-informed residual-income framework

Reassessing poverty measurement in Europe using a cash-flow-informed residual-income framework

We develop a cash-flow-informed residual-income (RI) framework that subtracts non-discretionary expenditures (housing costs, loan payments, transportation) from disposable income (DI) to reassess poverty in Europe. Using EU-SILC 2020 microdata and Eurostat methodology, we estimate and compare RI- and DI-based poverty rates. The RI results show higher poverty prevalence and stronger alignment with subjective hardship. Poverty-status transitions and subgroup analyses indicate mortgage holders, renters, and trans…
